I have an '03 Supercrew. It's not lifted, and no leveling kit, stock engine except for K&N air filter and dual exhaust. I need new tires. I want to go bigger tires on the stock wheels. I've read lots of threads and know without lifting the biggest I should get are 285/70/17. What I can't find is, will that size tire cause excessive shifting? Maybe only under a load? I don't know what rear end I have. How do I find that out?
On another topic, I recently had to change a tire. I don't know about other years, but mine has a "key" that's used with the crank rod to lower & lift the spare. The key worked fine to lower the tire, but won't work to lift the weight of the tire. It'll lift without the tire, but not with. The key kept slipping and won't stay engaged. I could not get that tire lifted back into place. I took the tire winch out of the truck and tack welded the key onto the winch. It works great, now.
Thanks in advance for help with the shifting question.

All 2003 Screws with 17" wheels have 3.73 axle ratios.
After having the BFG AT KO in 285/70R17 from 200 miles to 54k miles, I recommend a p-rated tire in that size instead. They are about 3/4 the weight which affects performance more than the 3% larger size. How much the tranny shifts depends on your driving style and conditions. For me, the heavier tires seem to suck the life out of my truck.
