Lookin to buy 02...

Hi all, newbie here.
I'm looking at a 02 SuperCrew XLT F with 81,000 on her. The body has no dents, very few chips, casette with no cd (ugh), auto with overdrive in the shifter.
Test rode and seemed very smooth (anything does after owning the Jeep Wrangler). The power doesn't seem up to par, but it is a 4.6. More powerful than the Jeep but less than my previous Tahoe V8. I can get use to the 4.6.

My questions:
1 - Dealer is "asking" $13995 and internet site says to make offer. KBB, suggests a dealer asking price of $15085. What do you think of the asking price and what do you think in these hard times would be a fair offering?

2 - The Tahoe overdrive was automatic. So i am curious as to how best to use the OD on this Ford? I don't tow. Leave engaged full time or ?

3 - I put her in 4 wheel drive and noticed at a slow full turn from a stop the front tires seemed like they were binding or rubbing. I didn't see any rubbing and assumed it was due to going to slow and turning too sharp for the 4x4 system?

4 - The Jeep sucked for mpg's, considering its small size. Had to fill up once a week and had very little storage/hauling space. It's the poor gas mileage that disappointed me, figuring i could live with the rest if i got great mileage. Anyway, so i don't expect miracles in the mpg's of the Ford and expect about 15 city and 20 highway, i think this is typical anyway from what i've read. No question here, unless I am off base. The Ford should get better gas mileage than the Jeep, provide a nicer ride, fill ups every 2 weeks instead of 1 and have some room for haulin stuff if need be.

5 - Any very likely problems i might encounter with this 02 SuperCrew?

Looks like a great sight, very informative. Off to continue reading! I appreciate any feedbacked offered and hope to be the new proud owner of this ride.

Thanks!
Tazz

I didn't know you could get a SuperCrew with a v6??? Anyway:

1. too much. around here you can get an 02 Crew 4x4 5.4 for 14k. I would think more like 11-12k.

2. leave overdrive on unless towing.

3. yes, 4x4 will bind when turning on dry pavement.

4. not sure of mpg for v6.

5. none that I'm aware of.

Good luck!

I'd say $10k tops is what I'd pay. I'd be happy to get $14k for my 2003 Lariat 5.4L 4x4 Screw, but doubt it would happen. No V6 Supercrews, ever. No issues in particular with the 2002 models.

The Screw only has a 25 gallon tank and indicator comes on @ 21.5 gallons in mine. Range is short for me, but I only get 11-13mpg.

$10k? Wow, you drive a hard bargain, are you available for bargaining service? lol
I had been thinkin #12,500 offer, but you pretty much makin me think harder now. This is the first Screw i have seen around here.
just sold my Wrangler, using an 89' Vette till i find a truck. I think the Vette is getting as good mileage if not better than that brick of a Jeep.
Thanks for your input!

Have you visted a gas station lately? Prices of large V8 powered vehicles are down, more so for SUV's than pickups, but pickups have been affected as well.

Kbb says $11k in good condition for private party sale, but that data will lag the market.

Well, haggled n scrappled...got the 14000 price down to 11800 and purchased.
02 FXR Screw in Blue. It was nice to discover it has a 6 disc changer that wasn't listed by the stealership.
Sure is a smooth ride, and should be even better when i get rid of the 4 different tires on her...lol
I "think" (only took a glance once) the tires are 285's, or 265's...and all a different tire, but same style.
Stock rims look decent, but i need to clean em up. Not even sure what size these stocker rims are.
I've always run BFG AT's on previous rides. But, not sure i want to go with the AT's this time.
THe vehicle "seems" to have a good stance. The rake doesn't look as much as other trucks i have seen. Not sure if this is because of the FX4 options or not. I looked at the top of the shocks and doesn't appear to have a front leveling kit.
Been tryin to read all i can since i haven't owned a Ford since my 73' Gran Torino.
Torsion bars? Er... is there a way to level or adjust the front on this ride without after market addition?

No front leveling kit for 97-03 4WD trucks. Crank the torsion bar up, then get an alignment.

I have 285/70R17 on my 03 and wish I had getting the P-rated Revos in stock 265/70R17 instead. Ride sucks and thye are heavy which is costing me extra fuel and decreased brake performance.

Is there a procedure ref. someplace for adjusting the torsion bars? How much i can expect to gain vs how it effects the ride?

Thanks!

285's are very popular, as are other D/E/F laod range tires. Lots of people like them. I don't like them and they are overkill for weight ratings for our trucks.

I don't have any information on adjusting the torsion bar. Try some searches here. Raising the front of the truck with the torsion bar will ride stiffer, though.

Apt, not sure if you have seen or followed my thread in the Tires sextion, but, I did get the 285's BFG AT KO's.
Even though i bought the truck with 4 different 265's on her, she ran smooth and with no apparent jerking.
Since putting on the 285's, 0-55 the front end seems to jerk a bit...more inline than a side to side jerk. 55 - 75 it feels like the front end is bucking like every 2 - 3 seconds. This is on new and smooth highway.
Does yours buck like that at higher speeds?

I assume it did not do with on the test drive with the old, different sized tires

No, mine is fine, smooth, just slow. I wonder if the computers learned the different tire sizes from the old tires are now the new tires with equal sized confused it. Try disconencting the battery for a while.

That's correct, with the 4 different 265's that were on it when i bought it last week, the ride did not jerk at all on highway.
Oh no, I had no clue my 02 had a computer that would or could analyze such and make self adjustments. One more piece to the puzzle.
I'll try the battery disconnect, they do have the ability to do "road forced balance" which is what i am pushing for tonight when i go back in.
Thanks!
