Kid with new SuperCrew ...and no clue
I just got a '02 SuperCrew 2wd (first car
) with the 4.6 Lariat engine. I thought it looked a liitle low so I asked around and it was pointed out to me that it has the 3.55 gears instead of the 3.73 gears (with my one year of high school auto I have no idea what that means). Apparrently that means my truck has smaller stock tires. I was wondering if it would take a larger tire without any modifications. Also if there any good (relatively easy to install) mods that you would suggest.

it means that you have smaller gears. it all depends on how much money you want to put in the truck. you can put some pics up and we can tell you. to start with, i assume you want more power, so add a cold air intake. if thats not enough, then go with a magnaflow cat back exhaust system. if thats still not enough, go with a tuner. ive got an edge evolution and have no complaints. you can crank the torsion bars (i think your truck has them) to fit a larger tire. i dont know what size you have now, but i think if you crank them you can fit 33s. It just depends on what you wanna do with the truck, theres counltess things you can do to it. tell me a little more about it and how much money and time you wanna put into and i can give you suggestions.

As previously stated, all depends on how much money you want to spend. Post some pics too! There are plenty of helpful people here and plenty of great rigs to get lots of ideas!!!
Good luck and welcome to the site!!

dayz- having a smaller gear ratio doesnt necesarily mean you have smaller tires.i believe theres a thread on here telling you how to identify your axle gear ratio and your transmission. for the axle there should be a tag on it and somewhere on that tag either a 3.55 or 3.73, also theres a tag in your drivers side door jamb that tells you the axle code and you can look it up. same goes for your tranny. in your other thread people told you that its a 6 yeah old truck and a suspension naturaly sags over time. i told you about some suspension mods in your other post. stock you can fit a 32" tire fine or possibly squeze in a 33" with stock wheels. gator has the right idea for engine mods, as for exterior mods it depends on what look your going for. you need to decide how much money you have to spend and if you have a theme your going for.

For the 2002 model year, Ford offered three engines all designed to use 87 octane fuel: A 4.2 litre V6 rated at 202 horse power, a 2-valve 4.6 litre V8 rated at 231 horse power and 293 foot pounds of torque, and a 2-valve 5.4 litre V8 rated at 260 horses and 350 torque.
From experience, the 4.6L V8 is an absolute dog of an engine. It's OK around town, and it gives good MPG on the highway. Sadly, it gets about the same MPG as the much more capable 5.4L engine. Get-up-and-go with the 4.6L is pretty weak, and it's not the best choice to pull anything heavy. On the plus side, it's one heck of a reliable engine. Typically, the only problem you'll have is the occasional check engine light with code P0401 (Low EGR Flow) which almost always is a bad DPFE sensor or clogged EGR vents (both quick and easy to fix). You can mod the intake and exhaust to make it sound better, but don't anticipate anything more than a 5-10% increase in horse power (if you gain anything at all).
I don't think Ford anticipated people towing much with a 4.6L, so the most stout gear ratio available for your truck was the 3.55. Recommended tire size was 275/60-17, and I would stick to something close to that. There's not a lot of tires in that size anymore, but at least you can get some decent Yokohama Geolander's or Pirelli Scorpions. Your suspension does seem to be sagging a bit.

well, I have beed told why my truck looks to be riding low and when I looked into it it seened to be right, the previous owners installed lowering hangers on the rear springs. my question is does any one know where I could get a stock replacement set?
I've got an 02 also but 4wd (nice to have today with 5-7 inches of snow coming). I ordered it with a 5.4L 2v but I want to change heads to 3v. I can't complain except the front pads were gone at 29k/miles. That was a good reason to upgrade to EBC parts. Of course I'm awful aggressive on braking any way. I have a 3.55 L/S front/rear with stock with 31 inch tires. They're good for snow but not for go. I'm plaanning on a gear swap to 4.56 but not a taller tire. The one's I want are 18 inch unlike the 17 inch I have and are almost the same height. I need some traction and grip in the corners and B.F.Goodrich has the tire. Being you have 2wd and non-limited slip you should get an Eaton posi unit along with gears. I'd say go 4.10 unless you're going to change to taller tires. Call a ring and pinion shop and have them steer you straight. I don't know what your budget is but definately get a posi. I drove a 2wd(never again) as a lease and got stuck in the garage (j/k)
. The shop here wants $1350 out the door for my swap but the gears cost more for higher ratios.
