Transmission Filter

I'm back again....As I stated last week , time to change tranny fluid and filter. I was told it would take about 4 quarts of Mercron V fluid. The manual says capacity is 16 quarts. I'm only dropping the pan, and changing the filter. Which is right? Also the dipstick says to use mercronV fluid, so I assume I have a 4R70W. 01 , 5.4, 4X4, I've got 5 qts..... Any info would be appreciated... Thanks....

ITs like 5-7gts in the pan, depending. This is discussed in detail somewhere in the boards, just search, its an awesome writeup with pics. A ton of us did it right away.

O just saw you have an 01. Im sure its not more then 5-7qts either way, the full 16 is including the transfer case which you wont be draining... And if you do then yes you will need all of it.

You are basically only doing a partial flus, unless you have a way to get the remaining 10ish qts out of the transfer case.

Thanks, madcat6183, a freind told me the 16, were for the torque converter. No way to change that without a flush..... They recomend to change the trandfer case at the same time.. Maybe I'll do that also.... Thanks again...

If you find a plastic plug in your tranny pan...no worries that is normal. It it used when truck was assembled, just throw it out.

Just curious, what's wrong with a BG flush esp if the pan and filter are changed/cleaned before having the other fluid flushed. Had it done once on mine and no problemo, driven 20k since.
