2004-2008 improvements?

I am fortunate enough to drive a company truck and my boss is good to me. Unfortunately, it looks like $12,000 more for a Superduty (over a comparable gas F-150) is getting rough to ask the boss to foot the freight for. He has made comments about how an F-150 could haul my needs as well, but he'd most likely never ask me to "downgrade". I'd just like to put the cash difference in my pocket instead of behind my butt. I have a family that the cash could make better use of than driving a fancy Superduty. If I downgraded to an F-150, it still would be a Lariat or a King Ranch, but the initial savings would be close to $10-12k.
Diesels are no longer as economical as they used to be over a gasser - especially now since ULSD and the DPF. It used to be the return on a diesel for me after one year and 60,000 miles was the only way to go - especially with Illinois having the "no sales tax" on D plates. That is all in the past. The gas versus diesel argument in the past 3 years (for me) has shown that there is no real advantage of diesel over gas for my driving. Towing would be a different story. If I really need to stay with a Superduty (and I am tempted because I have heard the 2008's ride so much better - and I'd prbably get a long bed to smooth the ride out further) I could basically drive a V-10 for the same fuel costs as a diesel, and save the cost of the diesel engine (close to $6,000 invoice).
So, sorry for the wind, but I am so undecided, I probably will never make a good decision. I am one of those who admits I don't need a Superduty, but it sure feels nice riding around in one. I have always said, I would need more than one truck in my garage to keep me happy, but that day will never come.

I know so many of you F-150 owners salivate over Superduties and wish you had one, but I had a 2005 and a 2007 Supercrew in my mix of yearly Superduty trades since 1999, and I love the ride of an F-150 over the Superduty... especially for a daily driver. That is basically what my truck does for 98% of its miles. My Superduty butt in the past 8 years has cracked farther. I have roughly 30,000 miles on this 2007 Superduty since June, and that's somewhere close to 750 hours in the saddle according to the hourmeter. It does not sit much. I don't even drive state to state. I only haul a travel trailer (6,500# max) 8-12 times a year on an average of 400 miles round trip, or so, and that's something an F-150 would do fine with, too, for that peanut amount.

I agree with you 100%. My last two trucks were PSDs (1995 F250 SC LWB and a 2001 F250 CC SWB). I loved them both and justified spending more on them up front for the fuel mileage and resale value...and of course there is the fun factor.
This time around I can't justify the expense, and that is what has pushed me tothe F-150. Pretty good bang for the buck and much more refined. I will miss the GVWR though. But, I'll work around that.

I feel for yah. When I got my '04 GMD HD2500 Duramax new, diesel was $1.40 a gallon, but when it came time for a new truck, I could not justify the additional cost, plus $3.60 a gallon here in Chicago. E-85 is a dollar a gallon cheaper than diesel (yes, I know the gas mileage goes down, but still).

I eat, breathe, and crap diesels. If I cut my arm, diesel fuel sprays out. If I fart in my underwear, it leaves soot and smells like diesel emissions. My wife will just never understand. Unfortunately, the more I drive my 2007 F-250, the more I realize it is just overkill for me to carry my butt around. I wish I could afford to buy it from the boss and get a gas miser car, but that probably won't happen. I am waiting until after the first of the year when rebates kick in. I am a little worried about how the pre-2009 F-150's will get hit in resale value when the 2009's hit the market. I trade yearly with my mileage, and one way or another, I'll catch it. Buying a 2009 fresh outta the box will mean no rebates. Buying a 2008 will most likely memat great rebates after the 2009's are released, but the resale will take it in the shorts. I see that with the current value of my 2007 F-250 now since the 2008's have been released. I just hope a new 5.4L F-150 will pull my 6,000# Jayco 26L without barking much. If I had to, though, I coudl go with a V-10 Superduty next time around.

I enjoyed that Bronco, but once I got used to that PSD, there was no turning back. A few years later I upgraded to a 2001 CC. It broke my heart to sell that truck, but I had little choice due to an overseas assignment with the USAF.
I was sure I'd buy another PSD when I came back, but I'm just not impressed with what I am reading about the '08s. I always got 19 MPG in my trucks on the highway, and mixed driving usually saw 16-18. Sounds like the new engine is struggling to make 14-15 MPG.
I'm going to get an '08 F-150, unless I can find a clean 06 or 07. Wouldn't even consider am 09 until 10 or 11 at the earliest.
Anyway, nice truck you got there, and good luck with your decision.

Thanks, Ken. I like my 2007 F-250, but I just can't fathom the cost of a new Superduty diesel. The V-10 is about $4,000 more than an F-150, but 90% of my yearly driving is just commuting to work and my jobsites. The savings in gas between a V-10 Superduty and a 5.4L F-150 is about $2,000 alone. I'd like to save the big money downgrading to an F-150 and save the fuel costs, and get the Boss to put that (or some of it, anyway) in a check to me where I can use it. The older I get, I realize a bill in the pocket is better than under my butt.
