anything I should know?
Hey everyone. I'm new here and plan on getting a new truck in the next 3-4 months. I have my decision down to either a Silverado 2500HD with the Duramax diesel or an F150 Supercrew FX4. I don't need the diesel but I have wanted one for a while. If I go with the F150, I could get a used boat with the money I would save which has me leaning that way at the moment. I'm sure the F150 wouldn't have trouble pulling a 4,000 or so pound boat. Let me know what you guys think of your Supercrew trucks and how they do towing with the 5.4L. Thanks
I wouldn't expect it to tow as well as a diesel, but I wouldn't be towing anything that would require a diesel. How does the 5.4L do when towing 4-6,000 pounds in hills and mountains? I'm sure it downshifts out of overdrive but I'd expect that it can maintain highway speeds.
Why not do a better comparison? A 2500 should be compared to a F250. If money is the issue, then compare the 1500 with the gas motor.
What if you decide to go with a bigger boat a couple of years down the road, then you'll complain that the F150 is not strong enough.
If your goal is to buy a boat, and settle for the cheapest tow vehicle you can get, then decide on the boat and go from there. Maybe a used, well taken care of F250 Superduty. Just have the transmission checked out before you buy a used one. My brother only drives the Chevy diesels and he loves them. He pulls a 40 foot stock trailer loaded with cattle and horses on a weekly basis. But, a bunch of Contractors and farmers around here used the F250. And they swear by them. The Ford dealer keeps a pretty good stock of white F250 4X4's on hand just because they sell like hotcakes around here.
The supercrew with the 3.73 gears and 5.4 is a good towing vehicle, but it can't compare to the 2500 or F250 with 4.10 gears and a diesel. Both are great trucks. Most of us here would rather get stabbed in the eye with a toothpick than buy a chevy, but each his own.
But, if you plan to stay with the 4000 # boat for a few years, I think you'll be happy with the Supercrew.

We just took a road trip at work with two of our 2005 Chevy 2500HD's and one 2007 F-250. I got stuck driving one of the Chevy's for two days straight. OMG! Worst riding truck I've ever been in. You got a good jolt every time the transmission shifted up and you felt every bump on the highway (and I was told I had the better of the two 2500's!). That diesel is soooo loud!
We're driving down this stretch of concrete highway getting thumped every time we hit those seams... ka-chunk-ka-chunk-ka-chunk. The guys in the F-250 came along side of us drinking their coffee bee-bopping to the radio in complete comfort.
I rode in the F-250 on the way back. Totally different experience. No road noise, quiet and a smooth ride.

I'm not going to argue Ford vs Chevy, I'll just say that I drove a new 2500HD with the duramax and an F250 with the 6.4L Powerstroke and I think the HD easily has the better engine/transmission combo and appears to be getting better mileage from what I can tell. I do like the interior of the Ford MUCH better, however. I'm not really comparing the HD and F150 as tow vehicles, as it is obvious which would do better. The reason I am looking at the diesels is because I have wanted one for a long time(well maybe not a long time...I'm only 22). It is definitely more of a want than need situation with it. I don't plan to ever have a boat bigger than about 4k because anything bigger would be too big for my favorite type of fishing. I guess what I'm looking for is confidence that the F150 won't have any trouble with a boat that size. I could get a 2500HD w/ duramax for about $40k MSRP but I think I would be happier with the F150 for the same price but with all the options. I do like the looks of the F150 Supercrew FX4 better. If you guys convince me that the F150 can tow that size boat, I'll probably be ordering one in November.
I'm fresh out of college with my first job and want to make sure I get something I'll be happy with for 5+ years. By the way, I work for one of the OEM suppliers to the big three and I do get X-plan pricing. Thanks for the help!

I love my Ford and would never go with a chevy. I'm baised when it comes to an opinion. here is a pretty good site to look at. www.thetruthabouttrucks.com It does a good job explaining what the F150 will do. good luck with your final decision.
an f150 with tow package will tow a 4k lb boat just fine wherever you want to pull it--unless it's a sailboat and you keep the sail up without a tailwind that is of greater speed than you are driving
