2009 F150 Gas Engines
2009 F150 Gas Engines
Just read an interesting article at edmonds.com regarding the new powerplants. The goal is to beat the socks off of the Tundra. This is a quote from the article.
"The current 5.4-liter Triton V8 is getting replaced by Ford's new "Boss" engines that are expected to displace around 6.2 liters at the top end and around 5.4 to 5.6 liters on the low end. Expect horsepower numbers approaching 400 and similar levels of torque, as Ford wants to stay on top of Toyota's 5.7-liter V8. It delivers 381 hp and 401 pound-feet of torque through a six-speed automotic, so expect six gears in the Ford's automatic transmission as well."
What do you all think?

What about the V6? Have you heard if they are going to make a change on that.
The 4.2L is a good motor, but Id love to see them upgrade it to something with overhead cams.
I dont see why Ford doesnt drop the 4.2L V6 and just put the 4.0L OHC V6 from the Explorer/Ranger in the F-150. It would make sense because that would be 1 less different engine that Ford would have to make.
Some of the traditionalists on here will probably flame me for this comment, but Im looking at trading up to an '04 or newer base model F-150 4x2 with a V6 and Im not really looking foreward to going back to a pushrod motor. IMO, its a step backward from a technological standpoint after spending the past 6 years driving an F-150 with a Triton V8.

GM and Chrysler have been making N/A motors with not just more peak HP and torque, but more useful HP and torque, which also run just about as smoothly, reliably, and are no less fuel-efficient than Ford's modular motors.....with pushrods. I wouldn't call it a step backwards at all.
This isn't really new news, you should be able to turn up several posts and opinions on this with the search feature. I've spent a little time on blueovalnews.com and they have some threads talking about the possible engine offerings as well. It may interest you to check that out also.

Will have to do some more net research to see what they are going to do with the V-6. I have heard that the new "Boss" engines will be double overhead cam type but maybe this is speculation. To compete with the current market, Ford must go state-of-the-art, for power, gas mileage, and engine configuration.
The next few months will be interesting with more new facts and less conjecture. Also, the F150 Diesel is proposed for unveiling in late 2009, if all of the net threads prove to be accurate.
I will be in the market for a new truck about 2009 or 2010, so I am really interested in the progress.

your so far off your not even funny. Ford makes the torque way more torque down low than the others. Hands down. That is far more useful in a truck. I don't know where you get your info from...

Personally i see this as being a setup for a warantee nightmare on the technician's end, if they can't engineer the current lineup of 5.4's ect to be dependable, how the hell can they come up with the so called answer to Toyota??? I'm gonna call this a big steaming pile of **** right out of the gate.... (maybe if we're lucky, they hired some "navistar" guys to help out, like they did on the 6.0, and the current 6.4)....

The torque is there sure enough right off idle, but it runs out of steam quickly. I'm not bashing the triton motors.....I knew full well their shortcomings and yet have bought 2 F-150s since 2002, because overall I just believe they are the best trucks. All I was saying was that calling going back to pushrod designs a step backwards was certainly not necessarily true.
Two die hard Ford F150 close friends have both traded their vehicles, one a 1995 F150 and the other a 1998 model. Both vehicles had the six cylinder engines and manual shifts in 4X4's. Robert and John both bought Toyota Tundras (extended cabs with the 381 hp engine). Their reasons were both the same, 4X4 clearance, power, and cost.
I have been in both trucks. One is just loaded with all of the goodies, including a navigation, back-up camera, and blue tooth technology. The other is basically well equipped with the Off Road and towing packages. It amazed me that the cost was well below the F150 Lariat, Chevy or Dodge high end gas packages. Both of these owners drive like the old men they are and get from 17 to 19 mph on the highway.
My feeling is this -- in 2009 or 2010 Ford is going to bring forth a product that will trump anything that is out there -- because with out this effort Ford is going down the tubes and the management knows this. New designs, powerful engines, transmissions, and improved gas mileage should be the focus. And it is likely in late 2009 that an F150 diesel will be on the market to compete with the announced Dodge half-ton truck diesel that is proported to be sold in late 2009. That is why my next F150 will be a 2009 or 2010 unless Ford lets us down, then their market will fall apart. Just my opinion.

I would Hold Off for a bit!
When these New F-150 Trucks/Motors come out I would hold off for at least a couple of years since they are a new Model/drivetrain combo....my current 2007 so far has been absolutely trouble free since this particular Generation started in 2004........

Both of my friends used COSCO for a basic cost comparision. The COSCO price is the real factory invoice price which is given to the customer at one of the authorized dealers, in this case, Stevenson's Toyota in Lakewood, CO. This was done to get the real invoice in hand and then to low ball the price by working on dealer holdback at Burt Toyota, where the fleet manager was an old friend. So, off they went to Burt Toyota in Littleton, CO and made their deal with the fleet manager. The hungriest fleet manager gets the deal. Hungry means that one more sale could mean a big bonus based on total number of cars sold in the current month.
I used to sell both Toyota's and Ford's and have fleet contacts for both these manufacturers. They used my contacts. And yes, they both paid about $34,000 (except John paid an additional extra cost after he got his best deal to order a navigation system, backup camera, and nerf bars) plus neither one paid dealer prep and add on fees. John's deal cost him about $3000 in additionals and both vehicles were coming from the factory.
No factory cash incentives are available in the Denver Metro Area just 0% financing. They really got great deals and you can to by doing the same thing.
My personal goal is to get one of the new redesigned Ford's. And yes, risupercrewman is correct. If the change is in 2009, then it would be best to wait until 2010 or 2011 so that all of the bugs will be worked out. I only have 45,000 miles on my 2001 Screw and it runs and looks like new.
Anyway, these are my thoughts and it may add some ideas when we all purchase next time. Mert
