Fuel light

Does anybody know how much fuel is left in the tank (25G) when the low fuel light comes on. All that my manual says is the "the level of fuel is low" or something like that.

thanks in advance

I think it generally comes on when you have about 10% fuel remaining.

2 gals is about it. Remember the fuel pump is cooled by being submersed in fuel, so when you run the tank down the pump runs hotter.

Have you ever filled up the tank just after the light comes on?

When my 99 fuel light came on, I could put 21 gallons in. My 2003 takes 21.5 gallons when the light comes on. It is a 25 gallon tank, so that leaves 3.5-4 galons left on the two truck's I've owned. The most I've put in either truck was 25.1 gallons. I've never run out.

APT, putting 25.1 in the 25 gal tank? Did you coast to the pump? That's amazing. Last week I put 24.1 in my 25 gal tank & thought that was pretty good. Of course I couldn't stop thinking of all the junk I might be sucking up.

My '99 had almost exactly 13 miles from the time the light came on to the time it ran out of gas.. the engine quit about 15ft. from the pump on me once.

Needless to say the "Miles to E" feature on the 2004+ trucks is a much welcome addition.

The tank may be 25 gallons, but the fuel filler hose holds some and the fuel lines as well. Engine never sputtered.

13 miles after the light comes on? That cannot be right. Do you get 4mpg?

I tend to drive 10-40 miles after the fuel light comes on. Sometimes gas is cheaper by work or by home and I try to get closer to one or the other (~30 miles).

I don't have any Ford vehicles with MTE calculations, but I've had several Chrysler products that do. The low fuel light on our minivans comes on with 30 miles to empty and @ zero to empty still has 1.5 gallons left. No, it never goes negative as I've driven 20 miles after 0 MTE.

Yep, 13 miles.. I'm pretty sure it was a problem with the low fuel light on the old truck. It would die between 12.5-14 miles after the light popped up. That truck had 33's, K&N intake, performance headers/cats and no muffler and got around 10-13 mpg as best I could figure.

That being said, it would take around 20-22 gallons after the light came on, which leads me to believe for some reason it would come on quite a bit later than it was supposed to.
