Extended Warranty

You ought to get one, and i HIGHLY reccomend ANYONE else that has a new 3v engine to also, if you guys are not aware of the "spark plug breakage", i could tell you HORROR stories of the supposed "100k spark plug replacement" turning into a $3000 cylinder head R+R because of another one of Ford's "better" engineering ideas.....
I'm sooooo glad the most i have to worry about on my 02 is a plug possibly blowing out, but it's got 132,000 on it now, so i figure it will be ok.....

Maybe I'm just lucky, but I'm on my 7th F-150 and never had any major mechanical problems. In my view, the extended warranties are a waste of my money. That money does more for me in the stock market than in Ford's hands waiting for something to fail on my truck.
On the other hand, if you drive the truck 20K+ miles a year, it might be worth going with one of the ESP's. You drive a truck hard, eventually something is going to break. I bought a high mileage (used) Ranger 15 years ago, and put 30K miles on it a year myself. The ESP payed for itself pretty quick when the transmission self destructed and later the head gaskette failed.

I agree with you worland with the investment of the money issue.
iI think it is mostly a personal situation. If a major repair will put you in a bind vs you are at a financial spot where you could pay outright for the repair and put your money to use somewhere else. You also have to remember for those who drive LOTS of miles a year that an ext warranty will surely expire well before the year mark on the mileage.
You just have to weigh the cost vs 'insurance' of repairs. IMHO an extended warranty is just that, a pre-paid insurance policy for repairs.

First of all thanks for the replies.
I will be 62 in February and very well may retire. I never thought that I would go into retirement with anything like a F150. I saw myself with a high quality, no problem gas sipper like my wife's Toyota Camry. But here I am with my "beast" and I plan to keep it as long as possible. In my opinion, one reason Toyota and Honda vehicles seem to last so long is that owners perform the required service at the dealer (we do). And Toyota service always wants to adjust or replace most everything. Ford owners seem to have no problem taking their vehicles to Walmart, Jiffy Lube, etc. I have only had my truck to Ford Service and mostly have been pleased with both the service and the price. On Friday I had mine to Magic City Ford in Roanoke, Va. for the transmission service and oil change. Total cost was $165 which was less than I expected. I plan to buy a camper and travel after I retire so I need something stout enough to tow and still have power.
I have checked on line and I can get Ford ESP Warrenty at a discount.
For 6 years and 100,000 miles I can get Powertrain for $980, Base for $1250, Extra for $1500 and Premium for $1720.
If I buy a plan I think the Base @ $1230 makes the most sense since it also covers brakes, AC and suspension.

I did what Bootleg837 said. I got a quote on line for the ESP Premium with a $100.00 deductible , 6 year 75,000 mile for $955.00. I called my selling dealer and he matched it and gave me the same warranty with a $50.00 deductible for $1035.00. My truck is less than a year old and had 8400 miles when I got the warranty in March 07. I believe it would had been another $100.00 if it had over 12,000 miles or was over 12 months after date of delivery but less than 3 years and less than 36,000 miles. I just wanted piece of mind as all new vehicles have a lot of electronics and one visit could cost me what the warranty costs.

Ken, the quote was for the ESP Premium, 6 year, 75,000 mile, $100.00 deductible. It was from a Troy Dietrich from Ford of Greenfield in Greenfield, MA, 01301. He quoted $955.00 for my truck which is less than a year old and under 12,000 miles. His phone number was 413-773-5455. I was going to take it but my Ford dealer matched it. I got this quote in Feb. 07.

Maybe I've just been lucky but I've bought quite a few vehicles, both brand new and used, and I've always declined any further warranty. I've never had anything more than $400-$500 in repairs and that was only a couple of times. Like I said, maybe I've just been lucky that nothing expensive has happened to me after warranties have expired, but the money I saved by not buying them more than outweighs the couple of repairs I've had to eat. Then again it's been years since I've kept a vehicle more than 90K or so.

I have spoken to Troy and he sent me some very impressive numbers. As soon as I can pull the paperwork together I am going to order my plan. Thanks again for your help
