Change tranny fluid or not

While servicing my 01 Screw, checked the tranny fluid, and it was completely at the top of the dip stick. I think it was serviced when I bought it, but not sure! the truck has 50k on it. 5.4 , fx4. don't know what transmission I have. If I do change fluid & filter, how much MercuronV fluid do I need?

IIRC, the trans is probably a 4R70W and I believe the capacity if draining the torque converter is somewhere around 10 or 11 quarts. If you are just dropping the pan, I think you will need about 4 or 5 quarts.

I'd just take it in and get a full flush. Its worth it vs. time and effort against doing it yourself.

I'll agree with having the tranmission flushed. I did a tranny flush for my 30K mile service, just for the sake of maintenance even though the fluid looked great before the flush. I noticed some better driveability afterwards.

The guys at the local parts store gave me filter made in China. No Way was that thing going in my truck! So it was quickyl returned. I only had to show the manufacturing country to get a refund. Back to the dealer! So is there any way of knowing for certian what tranny I have? Serial#or vin#???

You might try looking at the Veh Certification Label (drivers side "B" pillar" or drivers door) for the trans code. The info below is for my 2003.

7 - four-speed automatic (4R100), heavy duty
E - four-speed automatic, E4OD (4R100)
M - five-speed manual overdrive (Mazda M5R2-C)
U - four-speed automatic, AODE (W/4R7OW)

Is this the number you're talking about mgsalida? If so, is it a W/4R7OW?

Dingo:
Yes, that is the trans code. You indeed have the 4R70W trans in your truck.

Also, just for the heck of it, you also have the 3.55 L/Slip (H9) rear end gear.

For what its worth, and as far as i know, ALL supercrews from 01-03 will have a 4R70W in them. Have yet to see a 4R100 or a stick tranny as a option.
