towing

i am currently looking for a toy hauler rental for a vacation coming up this summer, so i have been calling around and found a toy hauler, however I think the guy is blowing smoke up my !@#%.. anyway its a 27' fleetwood redline with these specs:

Specifications
GVWR (lbs)1 9,995
Cargo Carrying Capacity (lbs)2,3,4 4,490
Gross Dry Weight (lbs)5,3,4 5,505
Hitch Dry Weight (lbs)5,3,6,4 806

the guy says i can pull it as long as I have a weight distibution system on the hitch? i am driving to monterey california from portland oregon.. does this sound like its doable?

Thanks,
Josh

5,500 lbs
800 lb tongue weight
Empty, this seems reasonable for any F150.

In the end, it depends on how much weight you plan on hauling in the trailer/in your truck.

What is your truck rated to tow?

rated to tow 9600lb's, I have one motorcycle and enough gear for 5 nights with me and the wife.. plus a couple coolers full of beer!! LOL

I am wondering if the weight distribution hitch will cut the tongue weight in half?

Not sure about the cutting in half part...but if you load your trailer carefully you can keep the tongue weight manageable by putting weight toward the rear of the trailer...I'll assume your truck is rated to have a tongue weight of 10% of the max trailer weight, or 960 lbs.

I think it's a general rule of thumb to have the tongue weight equal to 10% of the trailer weight anyways.

I don't recommend Toy Haulers for 1/2 pickups. Every trailer's dry weight rating is 10-20% under the weight you actually drive it home with, plus camping gear, fuel, water, and the toys. Toy haulers are built stronger to handle the weight of toys, so they weigh more than comparablly sized regular RV's.

If all you have in one dirt bike, why do you need a TH? Can't that fit in the bed and get a lighter RV?

I also say don't tow this trailer.
You need to know that the 'gross combined weight' is the limit not the trailer weight.
Your hitch is not rated for more than 600 lbs unless you put a heavy class 3 or a class 4 on.
If your trailer dry gross is 5505 and your truck is say 5500, your already at GCW of 11,000 lbs and you have not added your cycle, passengers and other items yet.
Better rethink all this.

I think you are fine. Look at your GVWR and if you're under it. Go for it.... These trucks are all under rated at the factory.

I have a 2005 supercrew and I would pull this right away. My trailer with my car on it is 5500 lbs. That is without tools, jack or even the 4wheeler which I do put it on the trailer with the car from time to time!!!!
