4x4 not engaging
4x4 not engaging
This morning my 2001 Screw would not engage into 4x4 high. The indicator lamp lit, but I could feel it not engaging. I have noticed also that in the last day or so I have lost some lamps in the climate control area and some in the gauge cluster.
I have checked every single fuse (pass. compartment and under the hood) and all check OK. I park inside a non-heated attached garage every night.
While checking fuses this morning inside an heated space at my workplace for an hour or so, when I left everything worked perfect. My 4x4 high was working just fine, some of my lamps that were out are now back on (except for one or two in my dash/gage cluster).
Any clues of what was going on? Could something have been frozen up (solenoid)?
I live in Michigan where it has been extremely cold and snowy for about a month.
Thank you for any assistance or suggestions.

If you haven't done so, you should post in the drivetrain section. I just happened to go into the s.crew section today.
I don't hve any clue as to your electrical problem.
However as to the 4x4- I also live in Michigan and am glad I can finally get in some ice fishing.
Sorry I got off track. If the 4x4 light works then the transfer case and assoctiated stuff is working. The light shows that the transfer case is in 4x4 mode, but the front diff. is not locking in.
There is a silonoid on the bottom of the diff, under a black plastic cover, I think it has 3 or 4 small screws on it.
It moves a lever on the differential. It operates off 2 silonoids behind the battery.
If the silonoids, the small hoses leading to the silonoid or the connections are bad (or the one of the diff.) then your truck won't go into 4x4 mode.
I keep calling the one on the diff. a silonoid. Ford calls it a motor.
There are one or two clips that hold the silonoid on.
Two hoses on the silonoid. Vaccum on one puts it in 4x4, vaccum on the other puts it in 2 wheel.
Just trying to give you a rundown on whats there.
There is a small lever sticking out of the diff. that the silonoid moves back and forth. I guess its possible that if it got iced up real bad it might not want to move.
You might want to remove the plastic cover and spray the lever and end of the silonoid with a penatrating oil of some kind.
Then I would switch back and forth from 4x4 to 4x2 to free things up.
You don't need to be moving to do that.
Let me know if this helps you out.

Thanks bullseye670! I just went to move the thread and noticed another 4x4 having the same problem. I appreciate your help and I'll take a look underneath and give her a good shot of penetrating lube!
