Got a 06 supercrew with the 3valve...V8....the truck is rapping loud in a cold start, is this a norm for this engine?? Need help, can this be a fix up thing?

 

I've noticed this with mine lately too. I here mine real good when I roll my window down (drivers side) and pull up to something, at a stop. So far I seem to only hear it when it's cold.

 

Make sure no one put zip ties on your driveshaft!

 

How many miles? I know on my '00 5.4l that it was common.. I think it is called piston slap and it is normal for our mod motors, 3v or not..

 

Like smoothSL said, the sound you are talking about, when ford started building the triton motors they actually made the piston smaller because they were afraid there would be greater expansion when the engine heated up so there would be less chance of the piston ceasing in the cylinder, why they did this beats me. Now I have a 06 my bud has a 99. His does it when it’s cold outside as for mine there is no such problem. I believe ford resolved this issue with later models. I hope that helps I was not sure if that was your exact issue.

 

Does it have a good flow? Maybe you should look into getting it signed up with dr. dre or something.












Every 5.4 I have owned makes the piston slap sound, especially the colder it gets out.
