When to get tune-up?
When to get tune-up?
I have just over 66,000 kilometers on my screw. The truck was purchased in April '01. I have the platinum plugs in my truck. Should I be looking at getting a tune-up done on my truck or should I wait til next spring (2007)?
The truck runs well, the mileage is about what it should be. I am of a mind that if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

I normally change the platinum plugs in my Ford trucks around 75,000 miles. In every case, the electrodes were in great shape and they had quite a bit of life left in them. No doubt they would last to 100K.
On the other hand, the outside of the OEM plugs can (and do) rust into dust. For instance, a had an OEM plug blow in a 4.6L at 30K miles. The spark plug hole was full of rust, and after cleaning it all out, I found there was almost nothing left for the socket to grab onto. Had to use a long, undersized socket hammered onto what was left of the bearing surfaces to get the plug out. Seems to happen to plugs with hoses running near them. Perhaps condensation dripping down from the hoses onto the engine? I've only encountered it when stationed in humid climates and the vehicles weren't kept garaged.
