Question How much oil to use in SuperCrew

I have a 2001 SuperCrew and I'm confused on how many quarts of oil it should use.

Walmart puts in 5 1/2 qt and leaves the other half in a plastic bag on the seat.
So I went somewhere else and he said I had 1/2 qt TO MUCH in it !!
Then I go to another Walmart and they tell me I'm 1/2 qt low.

What the heck is going on?
Do I need 5 qts 5 1/2 or 6? And why would service depts not agree on the amount of oil it should hold?

Thank you

With a filter change, mine takes 6 quarts. I have a 01 Screw with the 5.4. The best thing to do is check your oil yourself and adjust it accordingly.

I just changed my oil today on my 02 screw 5.4, installed a motorcraft oil filter and pour in 7 qts of quaker state 5-20 oil. Check the oil level again and it's right on the top hole of the dip stick

Well according to Ford...all 4.6's hold 6 quarts with filter change. All 97-03 5.4's hold 6 quarts with filter change(including Lightnings.) All 2004-2006 5.4's hold 7 qts with filter change.

I put 6qts and change in my 2001 5.4 . When it was under warrenty I had the dealer change it .
They would put 7 qts in . I asked them why they would put 7 when the fsctory specs out 6 .
I never got a intelligent answer on that one.

From what I was told the levels they list in the owner's manual is an "average" across the production line of that vechile type and specs. Because I ran into the same problem where the dealership changed my oil and said they added 7 quarts instead of the six listed. When I asked why they did this and that is what I was told. Not quite sure what it meant then or yet still today.

I used to work part time at a well known fast lube place and their computer system would tell you have much oil to pour in depending on what type of vehicle you had. A lot of times it would just barely be above the min line and if the customer wanted it at the full line he'd be charged for another Qt of oil.

I felt it was just another way to get a buck. I quit after a few months cause I felt alittle quilty charging senior lady's over 25 bucks just to change their wiper's and the fact I was ready to kick some punk *** kids for the way they worked.

The company loved it, just be glad they're not in the tire business.

WTF? An average? What? Are they saying the factory could use some different sized oil pans, so you may get a 5 quart or a 7 quart, so they just put 6 quarts in the manual as an average? If your mechanic told you that, then you need to run, as fast as you can, away from him.

The 97-03 5.4 takes 6 quarts. Period. End of discussion. If your local shop is charging you for 7 quarts then they are screwing you, and if they are only giving you 5 quarts then you are running a quart low.

Oil

The manuals do not spec. an average amount of oil. My '97 4.6L XLT always took 6qts. with a filter change which is the only way I have ever changed the oil. My '04 5.4L calls for 7 quarts w/filter. Guess what? 7 quarts was right. Follow the manual, ensure the oil is adequately drained ( ie truck is level @oil change) and make sure no leaks after. A relative had a problem where a filter was changed but the neoprene seal from the old one 'stuck' to the sealing surface of the engine. This occurred on a Toyota and the oil chg. was by Jiff....e. Anyways, the truck dumped all the oil in less than a 1/2 mile from them. Luckily, he shut it down immediately and the problem was only an inconvenience.

I put 6.5 quarts in my truck. I know the book says 6 qts, but that only brings me up to the minimum level on my dipstick.

You either have the wrong dipstick or you are not inserting it all the way. 6 quarts is what the 97-03 5.4 takes, and that will take it to the "full" line, not the minimum line on the stick.

I beg to differ. You can find dozens of board members here who will tell you that 6.0 quarts will show from anywhere from 1/3 to 2/3 of the distance between "full" and "add a quart" on the dipstick of a 5.4 or 4.6, including me.
