2002 SCrew strange prob

Having a strange prob w/ my truck. First off 2002 w/ 60K miles. I noticed yesterday afternoon some oil drops on the ground after I had pulled in the garage. Got underneath the truck w/ flashlight but didn't find anything. I did find some oil residue behind the oil pan. Right behind the oil pan there is something else w/ a rubber type insert that you can pop off.....I noticed the oil around this area...any ideas?

I also was about a quart low, but after parking it I don't see anything leaking...maybe just using some....seems strange for only 60K?

That rubber insert you are talking about is an access hole on the transmission bellhousing. If you had a Torque Converter drain plug you would get at it from that hole in the bellhousing, they put a rubber plug in it to keep dirt and water out. It sounds to me like you either have a leaking rear main seal on the engine or the front pump seal is leaking on your transmission. But if it's definetly motor oil leaking, it most likely is the rear main seal.

well checked it again last night and didn't see anything, put some paper on the ground and it was dry as can be this morning. No idea but will continue to check it and see what the deal is.

Still leaking. Thought the PCV valve might have something to do with it, swapped that. I thought it was rear main at first but it looks like it's trickling down from somewhere, can't see where. I've felt around the valve covers but they look fine. I figured if it was rear main I'd see it lower and not coming from up above...although I may be wrong? Anything else along the passenger side that I can check for?

Dropped it off at the dealer yesterday and it's as I figured after reading several horror stories.........head gasket. I read a ton about the 99's having this problem and some other years. An inspector is supposed to check it out and then verify it I guess.....after that Ford is supposed to pay the costs. I'm very happy about that. I hate that this happened......wasn't a bad leak, but had I of kept driving it no telling what would have happened. This is my first prob like this since owning a Ford.......can't believe it.

Its funny you posted something about this.. I just changed my oil about a week or two ago. This past weekend I have noted just a small oil/grease like spot on the garage floor where I park. I crawled under there and saw no obvious leaks and double check to make sure the filter was on tight. I have been leaving cardboard under my truck to see it has continued which it has not. So I hope I am not going down the route of a head gasket.

I am curious to know is why is Ford picking up the expense for this...??

Well long story short. The wife and I were going back and forth about getting the extended warranty when we bought the truck. I forgot she won out and thats what saved me......extended warranty. She's reminding me everyday of it as well haha. The total was just about 2K, that of which I had to pay about $125/deductable and misc. costs.

Mine sounds similar to the leak your having.......it looked very much l like a rear main leak except I could see it coming down from the passenger side but was unsure exactly where from. It wasn't a big leak either.....it was dripping out very little, if any sometimes. I'd crawl under it and see if you can see exactly where it's coming from. I'm glad mine is fixed....but I'm very worried that it could happen again.

Be careful had my oil changed and developed a leak, 120,000 miles.
It turned out dealer tech did not clean up after himself . Took it back and they cleaned the area under the filter l and have no more leak.
