A friend gave me his bed extender after he sold his F-150. I went to put it in my 06 Screw when I saw that some sort of brackets are needed on each side of the bed to install this thing and he doesn't have them. I talked to the parts dept. at a local dealership and they said I can't buy the brackets. Does anyone know anything different...like if they can indeed be purchased, and where? I'm not even sure what they look like. It kind of sucks that I got the extender for free and I can't even use it.

 

The mounting pins... yes, they're available...

i bought an extender off ebay and it came without the bushings for the lock pins or the swivel bolts. all i can say is unless you have a friend in the parts department, be prepared to pay $$$$ for a few little pieces of plastic and two bolts. i couldn't believe what they were charging. i almost flew off the handle. they at LEAST double their cost price. they quoted be over $85.00 for these six little parts. make a big fuss and they'll come down a bit. good luck.

 

My two mounting bolts were like $16 I think... that is, if you're just needing the mounting bolts -- again, that's the part number hand written at the bottom right of the exploded view of the bed extender above that I posted...

I had an extender given to me also. I called the Ford house here and they quoted me 55 bucks for each of the mounting bolts (look like just a regular tailgate bolt as far as I could tell and from what the guy in parts told me). I work at a hardware store, so I just took a couple of plow bolts, drilled out the hole in the bed where the bolts go and used them instead. The head of the plow bolts fit perfectly in the bed extender and swivels just perfect. Just a thought with a little ingenuity you can get out cheaper. Then again the Ford house may have messed up on quoting me such a high price, no telling. I couldn't see 55 bucks for each bolt though. Oh well.

 

Many people may know this already but I figured I would post it anyway in case it helps someone. I ordered the parts to install an OEM bed extender and this is what came in....


On the left: Screw/Washer - Part# W707381-S900 (you need 2 of these)
On the right: Bushing - Part# YL3Z-84286A54-AA (you need 4 of these)





This is a pic of the left side. You can see where I have already installed the bushings in the top and bottom holes. The middle hole is where the screw/washer will go.





This is a pic of the right side. Here you can see that I have already installed one bushing in the bottom hole and also installed the screw/washer in the middle. I still have to put a bushing in the top hole.



So, there are the part numbers you will need and the quantity of each. I ordered mine from fordpartsonline.com and the total was around $46 shipped.....not cheap but not as expensive as what other people were telling me. I wouldn't have known what parts to order w/o other people's help here on the forum - Thanks everyone. Hope this helps someone else.

 

Great post! Good information that people will need. When I moved my bed extender from my 04 to my 06, I noticed that the center hole has a bushing in it on the 06 but it didn't on the 04. The pivot pin has to be threaded into that bushing. I tapped threads into the bushing on my 06 and put a nut on the back side of the pivot pin just to be sure it wouldn't vibrate loose.

 

Can anyone share bed extender install instructions?
SPecifically, the template or measurements for holes to be drilled.

 

I got a bed extender for my dad from a guy who had a crew cab but wanted to put it on my dads super cab, but the holes in the middle are too big. I saw on the crewcabs their is a little metal cylender welded in their so I dont know what to do. Its a 2004

 

The 04 bed extender mounting hardware kit included a nut to put on the threaded pivot pin. When I moved my bed extender from my 04 to my 06 I noticed the addition of the bushing in the middle hole and I tapped some threads into it and used the nut on the back just to be sure it couldn't come off. On the 04 the larger middle hole does give you more adjustment, although the extra adjustment really isn't needed. I guess that is why they did away with it.

 

I had an 04 w/ the bed extender. I ordered an 07 w/ thsi option also, but they forgot to include it. So the dealer moved the one from my 04 to the 07. It doesn't fit properly. It pivots in and out, but the locking pins don't line up in either position. It's close, but no cigar. Some minor adjustment is needed, but doesn't seem to be possible.

 

The holes for the bed extender on my 04 allowed for the pivot pins to be adjusted. The holes on my 06 do not allow for any adjustment of the pivot pins. Luckily, mine lined up good and the locking pins fit in both positions. Maybe you could try removing the plastic bushings the locking pins go into. That would give the pins more room.

 

Does the bed extender hold down the tailgate from jumping around?
