Cool Hesitation during initial excelleration

I'm having a problem with my '01 XLT 4.6L. When I step on the gas from a stop I get quite a delay in acceleration before truck starts moving. Sometimes, I have to push down much further on the pedal to get it going. My "service engine light" is on and took it to my local autoparts store to have it checked. It came back that the "EGR flow was insufficient" but the guy told me that it could be caused by a number of different things. I changed the fuel filter but that hasn't helped. I would have replaced the EGR valve but I'd prefer not to through money blindly. Any thoughts?

Are you referring to EXCEL OR TO ACCELERATE? Because it defines as follows:

EXCELL = To do or be better than or surpass. Or probably, To show superiority or surpass others.

ACCELERATE = To increase the speed. To cause to develop or progress more quickly.
