Wheel Bearings: Repack or replace??

Not sure if this is the right area for this question but since its dealing with my 2002 super crew I thought I might start here.

I have a pulsing squeak noise that is coming from my front end. It increases/decreases in frequency (# of pulses) with the speed I drive. I notice it mostly in the 15 to 35 mph zone. From my searching in the forums here I have come across a number of different things to check. From possible warped rotors to wheel bearings.

And that’s where I thought I remembered that I heard the term or phrase of getting your wheel bearings repacked. Is that still possible on this model of truck? These days do you even bother doing that or are you better off just replacing them.

What does repacking actually do?

Thanks!

repacking is a service type option. If the bearings are still good then repacking is maintance. If they bearings are bad repacking won't fix it. MANY, MANY of us have a noise but with so many things like you say it can be hard to find the problem. Good luck.

I think that the 4WD trucks (at least) have sealed bearings. It's a replace only option AFAIK.

You have to ....

Replace them ... They come in a preesembled unit . I thought I was going to have to replace one of them and if I remeber correctly it was around 300 dollars labor and all just for one but I lucked up and they just put my old one back on and didnt charge me because it was fine . Unless the "noise" is being thrown from another bearing it wasnt the wheel bearing making the noise. I really wish the cause of all of our problems will be figured out by someone, it seems that with this many folks having this problem we could contact ford and get a recall !!! lol wishful thinking I guess ... Also see the post Strange noise a couple posts down the page if this helps. Good luck and if you get it firgured out please let us know !!!
