Need favor in Seattle - canopy or lid

I haven't decided what type of lid or canopy I'm going to put on my new Screw but am heading down to San Diego next week and need something to seal off the bed since I'll have tools and parts in the back while I'm there.

I think I'm going to get a Snugtop canopy but they can't get one put together in time and I'm still torn between the lid and the canopy (any of this make sense?). Either way, I'm stuck so am looking for advice or help. Has anyone heard of places like Canopy World renting out a top? Or, if someone has a top they'd be willing to let me use (for a price of course) that would work and be very much appreciated.

I leave next Tuesday and am running out of time! [edit: I'll only be gone for a week]

Sorry that my first post here is so lame. I'll make up for that later.

-Thanks,

Chris

I'm in the same boat, err, F-150 -- for my own reasons I've eliminated the hard cover options, as well as the tilt-openers. That leaves me with soft roll-ups and soft fold-ups.

I'm on the fence between these three:
I like the fit/finish look of the truxedo;
the access is very similar, but less low profile, but with some extras I like;
I like the lack of installed rails and easy-to-completely-remove extang trifecta, though it's perhaps the highest profile of the bunch.

I'm leaning toward the extange, with it's tri-panel folding design and (seemingly) nice seals and operation. Anyone have experience with the trifecta?

All of those look pretty nice but don't offer the security I'm looking for with tools and expensive sailboat sails in the back. Heading to the tonneau dealer to see what they have to offer.
Anyone have experience with the ******** Traditional tonneau (I'll use search as well!).

Fiberglass top is excellent. I'm very happy with it. I've repeatedly buying them on every pickups I've owned. Couldn't live without it for couple months. I own dogs, and it's nice to have top in back for dogs to ride while towing our camper. And it's nice bringing camping stuffs, having top to protect the outside elements, etc.... And can be secured with the stuffs in the bed. They can be pricey, but I've always felt it pays for itself after a while. THe fiberglass lid is nice, but for the price, it's more feasible to get top instead. Just my personal opinion and experience.

Thanks. I think I'm going to buy some sort of bed storage box for this trip and order up a Snugtop Super Sport or Leer 100R (?) with Thule rack system. I'm sure that as soon as I got a lid I'd need to move something that wouldn't fit! The Canopy shops laughed at me when I asked to rent something for a week!

I have always been a cap person myself as well ( Century ). Have found it works for the most part on everythin gI need to haul, rain or shine.

If you are going the route of the soft cover, and want lockable storage, you could try a pork chop box ( sail would be too big for one ). I used to have the Knaack job box before, and this time went with the Weatherguard Black AL porkchop box. Hold as much as my last job box, and it is over the wheel well hump in the bed, so I have more usable bed space then the job box route ( that was a 42" job box ).

Good luck finding a way to lock up a bed full of sails, that is a tough one without a Fiberglass lid or cap on the truck.

I have tracked down a fiberglass lid manufacturer in L.A. where I can pick one up on the way to San Diego. I'm going to get a canopy but have to secure the bed while I'm down there (as previously mentioned). Is it worth buying the lid in unpainted black, use for the week and try to sell up in the NW?
I'm not familiar with what a 'pork chop box' is but will look it up.

Finally I got a price of $1935 for a Snugtop Super Sport, color matched and installed. Any comments?

-Thx

I liked Snugtop when I was shopping for a top early last summer. However I optioned for Astro cap as it only cost me $1250 color matched etc. IT was about $600 difference if I remember correctly. Astro cap was ok compared to the ARE cap I had on the 98 Supercab. ARE seems to be built better and easier to open the rear glass door. I dont see the real benefit paying extra 50% for the Snugtop.

Sorry about that, the pork chop box is from wether guard.

http://www.knaacksecure.com/content....category_id=14

It is a box, 2 widths, that fits over the wheel well inside the bed. Kind of shaped like a pork chop :

I thought the same thing about purchasing a lid to try prior to the cap, but though if I got one, and didn't like it, selling a SCrew lid ( if you have a 5.5' box ) is more of a limted market, vs a 6.5' or 8' bed version.
I decided not to try it, then sell if I did not like it. Even though I see a lot of SCrew around, I didn't think I'd get back even 35% of what I had in it, of I had to sell it myself. You might find other wise. Think of it this way, how much does it cost to replace the sails ? If it is 3 times the cost of the black top ( guessing, I have no clue ) then that is cheap insurance for this trip.

1,935.00 for the color matched lid WOW!! I didn't know they were that much.
My Century fiberglass cap, color matched, with the tilt up side windows, and the tilt down front window, Yakama rails and rack installed with a rubber bed mat and rubber tailgate mat was 1,788.00 including tax.

I went ahead and chose a Snugtop XTR (w/ Yakima rack ). I bought the Screw used in 02' (2001 F150 Screw). The truck came with a Snugtop lid, but decided i needed the space for the all the camping and road trips i take with the Family.

I'll probably end up ebaying the lid (Color LL 5.5' bed) and just spend the proceeds on Gas. or some other truck toy.

I'll send picks as soon as I get it installed.

It seems everyone is dishing out some decent prices for canopies, but in the San Francisco bay area I did some price hunting and the SnugTop XTR was going for $2,149. Yup you heard it right, $2149. I still needed to add Labor + Tax + Yakima ( you can do the math). I had to go over 200 miles out of my area to get someting below $2k. I figured its an investment ( well that's what i told the wife) :o). Either way, its been ordered and I ended up getting the rug for the bed to match the Canopy.

If you live in the bay area and you end up relaying a price that is cheaper than what i paid. Thanks in advance and where were you 1 week ago?

Check the inside portion of Driver Side dorr. You'll keyword "Ext Paint" or something close to that. LL is blue, but since blue comes in diff. shades, the only specific color I have to go with is LL.

I just had a tonneua bed cover by leer put on my 2005 f150 and i like it, i had it put on there about 2 months ago and ive put it to good use.
I would recommend it becuase i have bought Leer before and it is good quality but it may be a bit pricey depending on what u want.

acording to www.paintscratch.com , for a '01 F-150, LL is Deep Wedgewood Blue Metallic Clearcoat. Don't see this option for '03's.
