2004 Screw XLT Rear end shudder
Hello everyone, let me first say that I love this site. I've been coming here for about a month checking out everything you have to say about the SCREW. This sort of friendly/helpful community is nice to see.
I owned a 2000 Toyota Tundra for 3 years; I liked that truck alot but wasn't thrilled with the low power and small extended cab. Never had a single problem with that truck, never had it in the shop for 1 minute.
Two weeks ago I bought a 2004 SCREW XLT 4x4 28k miles in mint condition, 1year 7 months left on warranty. I checked the truck thoroughly, and found no problems. Unfortunately one week after I bought the truck I started to notice the rear end shudder when I was taking off from a slow or stopped state, mainly happens while turning and seems to be worse when it's cold.
I see many of you have had this problem and seems like the "clutch pack" is the most likely cause.
I have made an appointment to take the truck in next week, my questions are:
1. Did the clutch pack fix the problem or has anyone had this replaced only to have the problem return?
2. Did the dealer try to sell you on a cheap fix that would only mask the problem?
3. Did the dealer fix your problem right away or give you the run-around?
4. Do you have any advice when taking it into the dealer?
My real concern is that they try to sell me on some sort of fix that only lasts long enough to get me out of the warranty. I'm not thrilled about spending another $1500 for extended warranty but will if necessary.
Thanks again for all the past and future information guys.
P.S. Sorry this was so long.

The same thing happened when I bought my 2003 screw. The dealer tried his "fix" but it kept doing it. Ended up they had to replace the clutch jn the rear end.
My truck shuddered real bad from stop to start and ESPECIALLY from stop to turn start!!
Don't take no for an answer - make them replace it! Especially if your truck is still under warranty!

I too have an 04 XLT Screw. Mine has a 2" leveling kit running 315's on stock 17"ers.
My problem is that when I get on rough road, the bed of my truck shimmies and rattles quickly side to side. Is this a clutch problem or a balanced tire/shock issue?

Do you have a limited slip diff? Every Ford truck I've owned has had a rear end shimmy/rattle when starting from a stop. It seems to be worse in the 4X4's than the 4X2's I've owned. I've never had any rear end problems, so I don't worry about it much.
Thanks for responding guys. I'll let you know how it turns out. I have to admit this whole situation pisses me off, I just wish American made vehicles would get their shiz together, I felt like I was taking a chance with my money switching from Toyota to Ford, this doesn't make me feel much better. 4 years problem free to 2 weeks and "In The Shop". I'm probably making a bigger deal out of this than needs be, I'm sure.

I had an interesting interaction with my dealer yesterday. I left my 04 F150 with them for a day and a half to have a shudder addressed.
The problem: When I would encounter rough road, I would look in my drivers side view mirror, down the bedline. I could see the bed shuddering side to side quickly and noticeably. Sometimes, when driving down a smooth road, it seems like it would catch the right harmonics and do the same thing. It shudders so badly, that I can feel it in the cab.
Their solution: It's normal. They tested other trucks on the lot and could replicate the same problem. They went on to say that it was something to do with the baffles inside the bed walls or some bullschit like that.
My question: Does anyone else experience this bed shudder while on rough or bumpy road?

I took my truck in this morning, I was called a short time ago to pick it up, they informed me there's some "grease" they needed to order for it that wont be in till next week. I mentioned the TSB, they said they knew about it and this was the fix.
We'll see.

I picked up the truck and told the guy at the counter (he's a friend of mine I've known since grade school) that I thought they'd change the clutch pack, he said "we have a process and this is the first step".
I hope it isn't a large hill we have to climb................

OK, so today I took my truck to a parking lot so I could do as others suggested, which is turn the wheel all the way and go in circles 7 or 8 times, I did this both left and right, when I was done I noticed tire marks in two complete circles where I had just been. It looked like someone was trying to do cookies. I'm going to call the dealer back and tell them there's a bigger problem.
