Wink IAC - Idle Air Control

Greetings,

I spent $100.00 for this information by actually going to the dealership and paying the diagnostic check price for it.

My 2001 Ford F150 4.6L V8 engine truck has 138,000 miles on it, and it is looks beautiful. It is a Lariat type and it still gets compliments.

At around 120,000 miles, a howling sound started coming out of the engine, which resounded onto the dashboard.

The first time I went to the dealer, they diagnosed it as a potential problem with the heater core. They wanted to charge me $700+ for them to take off the dashboard, and replace the heater core.

Instead, I did the job myself. I bouth the heater core, and sealed a crack from the plastic cover around the heater core.

This did not stop the howling sound. It persisted.

Recently, at 138,000 I finally go tired of it, and took it to another dealership who diagnosed it with a faulty Idle Air Conrol. They wanted to charge me $250 to replace it, plus a $117.00 IAC part.

I called other Ford dealers around the area, and found it for $106.00. Content that I found the best deal for the part, I asked the Ford Dealer Store to print me out a diagram of where the part was located. As easy as that, he did and I drove my truck home at a minimal mph.

I got home, unscrewed the 4.6L black cover that goes over the throttle body, and there it was. It was connected with an electrical cable, and two screws secured it to the throttle body. I replaced it as simple as that and the howling / throttle rattling sound went away too.

I hope this saves some our F150 friends out there at least a few hundred dollars, and plenty of hours of guess work.

Let me know if this helps anyone. I'd greatly appreciate it.

All you had to do was run the engine with the hood up and listen around a bit to find where the noise was coming from and you would have saved a lot of work and money.
You should listen to Arnold more often.
