truck topper

Been thinking of getting a fibreglass tonneu for my 01 Super Crew. A local dealer has both ARE, and Leer. He advises me to go with the ARE, cost around 1,000. Any info on this would be great. Thanks,

I have a leer on mine, I love it. I looked at the ARE, but they were a little more expensive. I do like the model (I've forgotten which one now) of the ARE that has a 3 foot door on the back, and it replaces the tailgate. It would have been great with my dogs.
The leer makes my Screw look like an expedition, at a quick glance. I'll post some pics when I can.

I just re-read your post- you're looking for a tonneau... disregard my last.

Funny you mention this. I was at Sam's Club today and a nice old gent with a hard top Leer bought a fridge. Needless to say, the fridge didn't fit in his new F-150 with the Leer. Sucks to have a brand new truck and not be able to use the bed for moving big items.

My hard top tonneau folds up, so I helped the gent out getting his new fridge home. The Leer looked nice, but it was a little tall.

I have an ARE on my 01 Screw. It's been great. I got it a couple of years ago when the family and I were going on a trip across country. It looks great and has functioned wonderfully.

Couple of recommendations if you decide to go with the ARE:

1. Check out ARE's website for coupons. At the time, I got the free automatic lock. I had to pay for installation, but having the thing work off of the truck's power locks and keyless entry is a wonderful thing.
2. Definitely get a dome light of some sort. It gets pretty dark in the back of that thing when you are fumbling around for something at night. I just got a couple of little battery powered lights from Wal-Mart and double-stick taped one on each side of the back of the bed.... just to the side of the tailgate. The double-stick tape didn't want to stick to the fiberglass. I think they cost me about $7 each.

As far as the hauling large objects..... yes, you will be a little limited in that department. I have a small utility trailer that I use to move the big stuff.

Thanks, for the reply, I've used the truck several times on vacation . With three people and luggage there still isnt enough room. With a tonneu , there's all that lockable storage in the bed. I have another truck for hauling. I'll probablu go with the ARE. Does the $1.000 price seem right?

$1000 is around the going rate for all of them. Additionally, you can often add items like power locks to them for a few extra bucks.

I have the power locking system on my ARE LSII and **LOVE IT**. It's so nice to be able to push the lock on my keyfob remote and know that my stuff is protected -- sure, if someone wants in there, they're going to get in there but, it's just one less thing to really have to worry about...

That's the locking mechanism....

Lastly, be sure to check www.4are.com and click on the SPECIALS link. They often times have a $ off coupon or something along the lines of a free locking system... Here's the link: http://www.4are.com/offers/offers.php
