Does synthetic oil really improve mileage?

My wife has a 2005 Screw 5.4. She gets about 15 MPG. Does synthetic oil really give you much more mileage, like 1 MPG? Does anyone know if the Super Tech full synthetic is any good? I was thinking of using that with a wix filter for 6K OCI.

I've never noticed a difference in milage. It will probably be less than 1mpg increase. However, synthetic oil offers superior protection for your engine and allows you to go longer between oil changes. That's enough reason for me. I use Mobil 1 personally. Are you talking about the Super Tech stuff Wal Mart sells?

I see no difference in fuel mileage. If it does help, it's not much. I live in the hot southwest, I just like the idea of the protection afforded by synthetic oil. Using Mobil 1 myself.

Yeah I was thinking about the Super Tech full synthetic at Wal-Mart. It isn't much more than Havoline here.

I definitly go with mobil 1 if I towed or off roaded, I don't though.

In a word---- NO! I switched from Motorcraft syn blend to Mobil 1, and saw no difference. I use Mobil 1 for its superior lubricating ability over dino, but you won,t see any change in gas mileage.

Ya, probably about as much as a good wax job, due to the loss of wind resistance. Nothing youd ever notice anyways..

So what you are saying is if I wax my truck, put in Amsoil, and put my tail gate down I will get 2 MPG increase?

Never noticed a difference in MPG between synthetic and dino oil. Only thing Mobil 1 ever did was put a big hole in my wallet.

I agree. In most of our trucks, if the oil and filter is changed regularly, and the truck is not dogged too much, the engine should last forever, even with dino oil. By forever I mean 200,000+ miles.

As for gas mileage increase, there might be a miniscule one, but I'll bet it would be so small you would have a hard time measuring the increase, and it would never pay for the increased cost of synthetic oil changes.

Jus my 2 cents.

No noticeable difference. Maybe at highway speeds on a trip. Full synthetic has the best available protection. I live in Texas in summer time. Hard on engines while in traffic.

Use good oil with good filter.

I personally use Royal Purple Full Synthetic 5W20 with K&N filter.

Um, i would recommend not going with some off brand crap sold at walmart. My motto has always been "You get what you pay for". I bought some cheap windshield wipers at walmart 2 months ago and i already had to replace them with quality ones. Im not sure it matters if you use synthetic or dino oil but whatever you get, get quality stuff not the bottom of the barrel. I mean thats why we all drive ford and not dodge right?

I looked at the Motocratt oil and it is only rated SL. The ST Full synthetic is rated at the newer SM/CF plus a slew of other new ratings. I am thinking about 6K OCI with a motorcraft filter. The ST Full synthetic is just a little bit more expensive than the MC.

Lowering your tailgate actually makes the drag on your truck WORSE due to the aerodynamics involved with your truckbed. Dont think of your truck bed as empty with the gate up, its full of air, and this air makes a cushion of sorts that the oncoming air rolls over and off of while going down the road, similar to having a tonnau (sp?) cover on. With it down, the air comes off of the cab and down on to the bed and gate, causing a downward pressure. Think of it like driving with added weight on the back. This has been proven in experiments and also on MythBusters on the Discovery channel (pretty sure thats the channel).

Also heard of problems from going to syn from dino. Somthing about the seals that dino would keep sealed after years of use would be more apt to let syn through due to the smaller molecule size of syn. My knowledge of this is from the older pushrod 302s the Fox Mustangs used, so it may not be applicable here but you may want to look into this. Not stating this as fact, but have heard stories of burning oil and leaks after switching in those motors. Probably due to the age of the motors but it wasnt proven either way.

I do know that putting windage trays in those motors increased HP, and through this MPG (due to less throttle needed for the same result). Dont think any large gains in either HP or MPG can be found just by switching though.

*BUMP*

Kinda curious if anyone else had heard this

I have been keeping mileage records since I bought my 2001 Screw. At about 50k miles I was getting about 15 / 17 mpg city/Hwy on 5W30 Castrol. I drive it pretty easy and I don't go much over 65.

I had a couple of 300 mile trips that summer and after one of them I switched over to the Castrol Synthetic blend 5W30 and my highway mileage picked up a full mpg to 18 - 18.5 mpg. I also got the same mileage using the Motorcraft synthetic blend.

Last summer when gas prices went up I switched again to Mobil one and my highway mileage went all the way up into the high 19's. BUT - the high 19's may also be becase I dropped my max speed to about 60 mph. When prices eased up, and I brought my crusing speed back up to 65 it dropped back into 18's again. I think this drop back to the 18's could also be due to a September winter fuel reformulation so I am not sure - I guess I have to wait until next summer.

After reading all your posts about no diffenence it makes me wonder if it was my light foot making all the difference with the full synthetic. I am fairly certain that the synthetic blend increase was the real thing as I worked pretty hard to keep speeds consistant during those trips. But I could be wrong - anyone else see similar results?

In any case, with my 2001 Screw, 5.4 liter, 16" wheels, LS rear end, I am now getting about 15 mpg city and 18.5 hwy using Mobil One 5W30. I will switch back to the Castrol Synthetic blend on the next oil change 'cause I cant stand not to change the oil every 3500-4000 miles (even the best oil picks up dirt and blow-by contamination) and it gets to expensive with the Mobil one.
