Why the big price difference?
Why the big price difference?
I am getting ready to buy a 2001 Screw 4x4 with 20,000... Seller will give me low Kelly Blue Book. My question is why is there such a difference between Kelly and Edmunds? Kelly = $16,630 Edmunds = $13,500
The vehicle is in mint condition only driven to work and back or aprox. 10 miles a day. Garage kept... Arizona car. I am trying to get a good deal, which shouldn't be a problem even at $16,600 as there is an identical one in the paper here with 76,000miles going for $22,000. Any info would be appreciated.

Are you numbers from their web sites or from a book? IIRC Kelly has a number of different conditions of the vehicle, does Edmunds have equivalents. Were all the same options included in both numbers? Real helpful wasn't I?
Both sites have about same data entry screens.
I believe that Edmunds gives more credit for low miles than Kelly does.
At the same time Edmunds hammers a vehicle with high(er) miles more than Kelly.
You can try entering the same vehicle and just change the miles a few times to see if that's part of the diff you are seeing.
p.s.
Now that didn't make sense. Maybe I have it backasswards.
Anyway there was a mileage allowance/penalty difference between the two.
That is all I actually recall.

Yeah I wasn't planning on buying a new truck for some time as my '87 f-150 with 266,000 miles is still running strong, but with only 20,000 miles, it was too good to pass up.
And yes I used the same criteria for both kelly and edmunds.
Well I think I will be getting a good deal for either price... maybe I can split the difference and get it for $15,000.

I just bought my 2001 Supercrew Lariat 4X4 5.4l with 76000 miles for $13,000.....which is a steal for this area in "truck season". The thing is perfect inside and out, all leather and options, K&N intake, Gibson exhaust, CPU reprogrammed, and the tonneau cover already installed.
NADA book value was $19,600......this is what most banks go by. That worked out good for me as it knocked off .5% off the interest rate.

In my trials I think Edmunds is closer to what you should pay. That is what I am going by to try and sell my Explorer. When people use Kelly's they check the boxes for stuff like power windows and locks, cruise and tilt, etc. When these boxes are checked it inflates the price, when in actuallity they are standard features and chould not up the price any. Edmunds considers what level (XLT, FX4, Lariat) and includes the base features for that particular level in its price. Then another screen will come up and you can select what factory options the vehicle has. Personally I think Edmunds is better. Or you can do what I do and print off both price sheets, show them to the seller and get an average price from the two.

I used to sell Ford & Toyota products. The standard for use by the managers and insiders for prices is the NADA book. It accurately shows the values of vehicles which the dealers are willing to pay for trade ins. The Blue Book is always inflated in its prices. Do not let them use the Blue Book for comparison on a purchase - you will pay too much! The internet offers NADA as a site and you can get all the info you need there or go to Border's Book store and you can buy your own NADA book. If you purchase fleet, as I do, it is wholesale to wholesale. Retail though, it is wholesale on your trade in and the max they can talk you into on the purchase - maximizing profit. Good luck on you purchase. Semper Fi
Armed, I just went through this, bought an '03 with 29K on it. I'm in the midwest and Edmunds definitly reflects this market. I was told and it seems to hold true that Kelley's prices are weighted heavily toward the coasts, L.A. and NYC. So, if you live in California or the east coast, the prices may be accurate but if you are anywhere in between, Edmunds is almost dead on. I bought our '00 Honda Odyssey with 22K in '02 at Edmunds dealer retail, I bought an '02 Nissan Frontier for $250 under Edmunds Dealer retail and I just bought my '03 SCrew with 29K on it for $18,400, it booked out on Edmunds at $19,200. None of these were close to KBB. My truck booked out at $25,200 in KBB?? I'm sure KBB is valid somewhere...but not here in the midwest. Hope this helps.
