Cruise Control & Fires

I'm sure this has been beat to death and I should search but.......

I have an 01 Supercrew and I have gotten no recall but after recent news of Ford not recalling All of the suspected modules I am a little concerned.

What is the deal? Is there a new switch?

If I just unplug the wire to the module am I safe from fire?

Help me out because I am moving to a new house in a week and I will be garaging my rig for the first time in years and I don't want to put the new house up in flames or feel like my truck is a danger to my family

Thanks in advance for your input

I also have an '01, but my truck was not part of the recall. When all this happened, I entered my VIN on Ford's website to see if my truck was recalled- it said no. I didn't like that answer, so I called my local dealer- they told me the same thing. My truck was produced late in 2001, so I guess it had a "good" cruise control unit. Give any Ford dealer a call, tell them your VIN, and they should be able to tell you yey or ney regarding your vehicle. Hope this helps.

I think I have read in other threads about this that Ford is assuming that if there is a fuse in the wiring that the fuse takes care of it. I would not want to assume that. The switch is on the end of the master cylender and just unplug it till it can be replaced. This will cause the cruise to be disabled but removes the power to the suspect switch. Then get the replacement kit from your dealer for about $20 and replace the switch and wiring. There are some good instructions on another thread, just do a search. That is the only way to be safe in my estimation. My Expedition was in the recall, I unplugged it myself till I got the letter from Ford that I could go to my dealer for the repair. Took them about 30 minutes.

Thanks guys.

I called Ford and they said it was not part of the recall, and I checked online with my VIN, but as bluejay said, that just doesn't cut it for me. I called my dealership and spoke with my service guy and he suggested for my own piece of mind, buy the new replacement ($18) and replace it.

So that is what I am going to do.

Not worth risking the house, kids truck over...... oh yea, the wife too.....

Question

Can someone post the part number of the replacement switch? I questioned my dealer about my truck (2001) and they said I have the correct (upgraded) switch. I would feel better if I could verify it myself.

Thanks.

1L1Z-9F924-AA (KIT-BRAKE RE)

According to an earlier thread, this is the part number. Do a search on"Cruise Control switch" and you will find threads that have pics of the bad one. It is orange. Also, detaled instructions on how to replace.

I searched and found no such pics for how to replace. Can someone point me in the right direction here?

Thanks,

Jag

Or this one, i think this one has a pic. Anyhow, under advanced search, put in "cruise fires". This brings up lots of threads.

It would help if I remembered to paste the shortcut. Sorry.

Hi bluejay432000,

Thanks very much for the links. I went through em, but did not see any pics or instructions on how to remove and replace it tho. Is it just not there or did I miss something?

Thank you,

Jag

P.S. Nice looking truck you got there.

I know I saw in one of the threads some step by step instructions. I just can't remember which one. i think it was posted by either Quinton or GI-Joe. Just do the search "cruise fires" and it will give you a bunch to check out. Basically, you just remove the old one, put a drop of brake fluid on the new switch so you don't have air in the system and screw the new one in. You do have to have the new wiring harness that comes with the kit and you have to use it. If you don't find the thread, I bet you can email Quinton or the GI-Joe fellow, bet they would not mind helping you out with better instructions.

Jag,

If you happen to get the info (pics) of the installation of the replacement, please post the link.
I'm also looking to replace mine. I checked mine, and it looks like the ones posted in the other threads (orange switch). I have disconnected it and taped it. I'm not comfortable with what the dealer has told me. I think they just refered to the recall list, and my build date wasn't part of it. The recall for 2001 Screw end date was 8/7/2000. My truck was built in Sept. 2000. So only being a month off, I'm not 100% confident I don't have the faulty switch.

Thanks

OK. I'm sure this has been posted somewhere else, but I just found the instructions (and all Recall info) on the nhtsa site. Using the search function for a 2001 Supercrew I found the info. It's NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 05V017000. If you click on the document search it gives you a bunch of .pdf files. The first one includes everything. Here's the link to the main file.
recall info with instructions
Good Luck to all.
