Mine clunks and slips. The slipping happens routinely when I first put it into gear from park. The clunk is intermittent and happens sometimes while accelerating but more often when abruptly decelerating and downshifting.

I have been told that if the clunking happens while turning the vehicle around corners then the clutch packs are suspect and if it happens on a straight away or from start-up then the slip yolk is more likely the culprit.

TSB 04-26-6 "Bump or Clunk when Starting from a Stop, 4X2 Vehicles" addresses the slip yolk problem. The TSB states: "This may be due the slip yoke on the driveshaft not slipping smoothly. Separate the slip yoke from the driveshaft (index for reassembly) and lube the splines with Motorcraft P/N XG-8 PTFE (Teflon) grease."

(sure would have been nice if a zerk was installed to not have to drop the driveshaft!)

I found a real nice website explaining the procedure with pictures:

I plan to give this a try next time I get a chance.

I sure hope this is the problem because the slipping has been driving me nuts. I have been having nightmares of shavings in my tranny pan. I will be relieved if this turns out to be the problem.

the ford service center at the stealership where i bought the truck pulled the rearend cover off and said everything looked brand new, and put new fluid ,anm modifier in. the next time i was there they put a new drive shaft on and they put grease on the splines but it stlii does it plus a very slight vibration can be felt now. factory rep is involved, she came to garage and i took her for a ride and wouldn't you know it the clunk never happened, so she said that she couldn't do any thing about. i read all clunks in fourm and it sounds like clutch pack.

I had the vibration at 50-55 mph and also a clunk when releasing the brake prior to acceleration. Thought it was a rear caliper hanging. Dealership NTF'd me the first visit. Next visit got a complete driveshaft/tailshaft replacement. The vibration is gone but now my tranny rear seal is leaking. Guess they botched it up with the new shaft install. The clunk is still there!! I plan to address seal and clunk on next visit to dealer. I do get an occasional clunk going up the parking ramps in the garage at work. I believe this is related to a downshift to 1st? It is concerning but seems to be just something a lot of folks have.
