To drill or not to drill

I need some advice from you experts out there.

I have to install a remote control into the box on the sidewall in my 01 Supercrew. I have the OEM factory plastic insert (bedliner) in the box. Can I drill through the liner into the box underneath which I assume to be metal and use this as a ground? Or should I run a separate ground wire anyway?

My alternative is to use a special bracket to attach to the inner cap railing and allow the remote control box to "hang" from the bracket, and then run a separate ground wire.

I am somewhat reluctant to drill into the sidewall under the bedliner as this could invite rust to start.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

the outside fenders are fibreglass but the rest of the box is metal. there should be 2 small holes on the floor in the front corners of the box to let water out. you'll have to crawl underneath and look up. the older trucks use to have these there but i have never noticed if these are on these. i assume they are.
