Service Engine Soon light
Service Engine Soon light
I recently had a cracked hose on the radiator of my 2002 Supercrew and it got a little hot. Luckily, I was able to pull into a local car wash and get water in it before anything bad happened. I put it in the shop and got the hose fixed, but the idiots at the local shop forgot to reset the service engine soon light. When I asked about it they said they would have to charge me $55 just to hook it up to their computer to read the code. I proceeded to tell them that it got hot that's why they had to replace the hose for me and that's why the light came on. I specifically told them to reset the light when I dropped it off. Anyway, I'm not taking it back to them again for anything.
My question is how can I reset the light myself? I called local Auto Zone and they couldn't help me at all.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Shannon

After a few drive cycles ( cold start drive and cool down) if there is no problem the light will go out although the code will be in the memory. Any one with a code scaner or auto tap etc. can clear the code but as I say if all is well it should go out in a day or two.
I think you got a new employee at the AutoZone. Try some other parts stores around town and I'll bet one will do it. If not, AutoZone and others sell cheap (close to the price you were quoted to clear) code readers that will clear the code. They are a great item to add to your toolbox.
P.S. Never replace anything on the first throwing of the code. If the vehicle is running OK, clear the code to see if it comes back. More often than not, it won't.

not sure if you read my thread where I was complaining about my truck having water get into the plugs or something. Anyway I drove the truck for about 150 miles or so and the service engine light went off. I think all mine needed was to dry out, so I'm willing to bet if you fixed the problem your light will go out in time as well.
Thanks for all the advice. Today makes the second full day since it was repaired and my light is still on. Maybe it'll go out in the next day or two.

Yes, code scanners can reset the light. Yes, you can clear it by disconnecting the battery. Yes, they sound like idiots.
Disconnect the negative battery terminal, turn on the headlights for a few seconds, turn off the headlights, and reconnect the negative battery terminal. The reset will be confirmed by a gauge sweep when you start the truck.

Well, I disconnected the negative battery cable and turned on the light switch in my truck Saturday and was able to reset the service engine soon light.
Thanks again for the help.
