Interior Console Choice

Looking at purchasing a new Lariat in the next few months. Wife likes the looks center console with floor shifter. However, my right knee seems to crowd it, making me somewhat uncomfortable. The shift on the column is fine with me. Or does the console just take getting used to?

Anyone else find the console uncomfortable or is it just me?

Thanks in advance!

Mike, I had the exact same problem when I first bought my truck. My knee almost hurt from rubbing on the console, however, I just did some more adjusting of the seat and don't have the problem anymore. I really like the center console I think it makes the truck look a lot nicer.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I thought it was just me. At my age, my old legs are not as nimble as when I was younger. I am 6.0' and 215 lbs.

We gave a Limited Edition V-8 Explorer and the console dips, allowing my knee to be more accomodated. The console on the 05 Lariat goes straight across, thus allowing my knee to hit.

Yes, it does look nice, but my wife and I tend to keep our vehicles a long time, so I wanted to make sure it was not a problem. Thanks again! Other responses are also welcome.

I found that too when test driving the FX4. It's one of the reasons I went with an XLT. I wanted center cnsole and buckets... but without that claustrophoic feeling.

I dont see where the XLT console has any more room than the FX4... but it certainly feels more roomy than the full length console.

Maybe its just a perception thing.

Thanks, J-150. Believe the Lariat is offered with leather 60/40/60 bench seats so I may take a close look at that. Just do not want to spend a lot on a truck and not enjoy it.

I personally prefer the bench seat and had to really search for an FX4 that didn't have buckets. They look good, but I bought a truck to be a truck...part of that is having room for people front & back. Another thing you might want to consider is the height of the console. With the center part of the 40/20/40 folded down it hits your arm perfectly as an arm rest. In addition to feeling claustrophobic, I felt like I was reaching down to the bucket seat's pass through console.

Shortly after buying my truck it went on a 13-hour trip to New Mexico (and yes...13 hours back, too). Driving that long, I was glad I could move around my seat a bunch without the center console in the way.

exactly. It's a LOT of money. Especially for a Lariat. It is nice, though, that at least you have the choice in Lariat/FX4 to go console or column shifter. Still waiting for the competition to offer that kind of choice.

Good luck and let us know how you make out!

I also had that "closed in" feeling while test driving the FX with the flow through console. One of the reasons I opted for the Lariat was, it was the only configeration I could get the leather (a must have!) in the bench 40/20/40 style. Plus, after I ordered the Lariat with skids and limited slip I have the best of both worlds IMHO. By leaving off a couple of things I didn't need/want/or miss (moonroof & heated seats) the cost wasn't enough to worry about.

Thumbs up

I've got an '04 Lariat. The console hasn't been a problem at all. The lack of a foot rest for my left foot is a real pain in the butt. I'm 5'9" and well north of 250. Maybe its 'cause I'm under tall that it fits so well

Mike,

Thought I'd toss my two cents in. I just traded my 2003 Supercrew Lariat for a 2005 KR with center console. I'm 6'1" and don't feel crowded at all. To me, there seems to be a more space.

Good luck with your new truck.

Thanks for the input, KR 2005. I really like your truck. That new Copper Color is very nice and very close, if not identical, to Burnt Orange, the color of the University of Txas Longhorn football team.

OOOHHHH I want a King Ranch!

There was a beautiful Blue one on the lot when I bought my 02 screw. The problem was that it had the rear bucket seats! The dealer wasn't real interested in trying to find one with the rear bench. So they located a White Lariat for me instead.

If I decide to go with another Ford, the King Ranch will be the one.
I really like that copper color!

Beauty eh!
