04 SuperCrew 4x4 - Towing TT
04 SuperCrew 4x4 - Towing TT
Hello, I'm new to this forum. My wife and I are interested in purchaseing a new Travel Trailor. I have done some math and I can't believe how much weight this truck can pull. My truck is an 04 Supercrew 4x4 with 3:73 rear,w/class IV receiver, and tow package. My truck weight 5,941lb with passengers and gear. The TT is 30ft and weight in at 7,240lb. The GCWR for the truck is 15,000lb. So, I'm under by 1,819lb. Hitch wgt is 720lb and max with weight distribution setup is 950lb. So, I'm under by 230lb. Truck will pull 9,200lb and TT weight is 7,240lb. So, I'm under by 1,960lb. The TT weight was done with empty holding tanks, but does include LP tank weight. This just seems like alot of weight for an F-150. It just doesn't seem right. I have double checked everything. I stoped at the dealership today and they said "Ford did there figuering on a 3 or 5% grade. Has any one pulled a 30ft TT that weight over 7,000 before with a Supercrew? If so, how did it pull? It seems by my math it could pull it ok on flat ground, but struggle on hills. I'm just not sure with it only being 1,819lb under the GCWR. Any information will be appreciated. I should of stayed away from the rv show and now momma wants this TT. I know I should of bought that diesel. thanks 04 blue monster

I'm not giving this info from experience, but I've read many posts that say that the F150's with 3.55's pull like a 3/4 ton truck. If you have 3.73's, you should do just fine.
If you're still queasy, flush your trans. and put in synthetic, get a larger capacity finned diff. cover, finned trans. pan and electric fans.

Blue Monster, Congratulations. I just bought a 04 Screw, Larait, 5.4, 3.55 gear (by mistake). I pull a 27' Wilderness with a slideout. (6600 empty, Approx 7300-7500 Loaded). It pulls great. The only bad thing is going up hills. Are you towing in the mountains ? On flat land I hardly know it's back there. I'm suprised it tows so well. The 18" lariat whells knocks 500lbs off towable weight. 3.55 knocks another 1000, down to 8000. I might put a 3.73 in this summer. However, I use the truck as a daily driver. I camp a little, but not enough to warrent a PSD F250. I think you'll be fine. Why dont you just hook it up and see how it does ? Make sure the RV place sets your WD hitch up. Measurements are very important. Pulling the trailer level will help greatly. I think sometimes people are not satisfied with the way thier truck pulls because they havent got it set up properly, even if they have the WD hitch.
Magnawake, thanks for your insight. What speed did you find that was comfortable to pull your trailor? Do you know what kind of MPG you got? I would be pulling mostly on normal highway with the occassional 5% grade. Also, I have 17in LT tires. Which you have the 18in on your Lariat. I just can't believe the technology and capabilities of this truck. Its a huge difference from a few years back. thanks 04blue monster
I have bfg's on the 18" rims. It's a light duty tire, not sure if it's up to the task. I wish I had 17" LT tires (44psi). I normally pull at 65 mph, however I feel comfortable towing at any speed. Pulls great from 55-70. I was real suprised in the performance. However, it works hard going up hills. I might switch to LT tires and get the 3.73 gear. I havent checked the mileage yet. The Expy got about 9 mpg. I dont expect much at all. The long wheel base is the ticket for towing. It's very nice, even when a 18 wheeler passes by fast. The Expy would suck me over in thier lane, whoooooaaaa.
You should do just fine. We have had dozens of customers with SCrews and that weight should be just right. We have a few fifthwheel customers and with the right combo that is a sweet towing rig. I have a 2001 SCrew with the 5.4L/2WD and I try to stay under 7500lbs. Now you will know its back there but the truck does just fine.

That is a big and heavy trailer! I have had good luck pulling a 2 horse trailer with about 2700# inside it totals around 7,500# and it is ok. Slow on the hills but so long as I rember to turn off the o/d it does just fine. Anyone out there ever use a gooseneck or 5th wheel? Just trying to figure out if there is enough room in that short little bed to upgrade to a GN? thanks
