Lid Choices and Ease of Removal

Down the road in a few months my wife and I are planning on buying a new 2005 Lariat Screw. Looking at three different fiberglass lids for the bed: A.R.E, Leer 700, and Snuglid.

Any opinions as to which offers better ease of removal? Thanks in advance!

Mike

May I suggest you look into the Undercover lid. Weighs less than 50 pounds, is water tight, easy to install and remove. Sells for around $600.00 to $650.00 depending on where you buy it.
Check out their website for more information. I really like mine..

My 15 year old daughter can remove the Undercover by herself and she is a very petite young lady. It only weighs 48 pounds.
Not her, the Undercover.....

I have the leer 700 series, very nice cover, absolutly water tight Color match sucks not easy to remove but opens high enough to carry a 55 gallon drum standing up, and can be driven at normal speeds with cover open. I have never had to remove mine other than for repaint sveral times trying to get leer to match truck.

So apparently the opening angle of the lid is greater on some brands than the others, thus allowing larger objects to be hauled without removal of the lid? My wife grows antique Texas Roses, so we would be hauling coarse cedar mulch.

I have the Snuglid on my '01 Screw, and I like it. I particularly like the low, flat profile. The ARE, while I am sure is a quality product, has a several-inch higher profile that gives a truck a "hunchbacked" appearance IMHO.

I chose the "no-drill" mounting option, since I was not keen on the idea of drilling holes in my new truck. As far as removal, it takes just a couple of minutes to disconnect it, but lifting it off is a two-person job, probably like most other lids except perhaps the Undercover that someone else mentioned.

The paint color-match was perfect (and still is 4+ years later.) Some clueless people have asked me if it was a factory part of the truck, like a giant trunk lid.

I like the Snuglid a lot. I will mention that the locks are not the sturdiest in the world. I think a bad guy could pry the thing open in about 10 seconds if he was so inclined. This does not bother me much, and in fact I ride around with it unlocked most of the time.

While I myself do not have one, some folks like the roll n lock or similar. This is where the cover rolls up into a storage compartment at the front of the bed.

Been looking at the Retrax retractable cover also. Just want to make sure it will work well in dirty conditions and the rollers would not bind. We will be hualing mulch occasionally for the wife's flower beds. Thanks for the input, everyone!

If ease of removal is a concern the Undercover is hard to beat. I have had mine for 2 years. It looks brand new, has been on and off at least a dozen times, and really is a one man job to install and remove. I wouldn't own another truck without one.

Thanks for the additional information on the Undercover Lid. Can it be repainted to match the color of the truck or is black the only color choice? Thanks again for the help!

Just read where they (Undercovers) can be repainted but not recommended. Anyone know why?

Probably needs to be painted with a paint used for composite bumpers or trim?
