flowmaster exaust

I was just quoted a price of a cat-back duel exaust system, for my 01 Super Crew. Flowmaster 40 series muffler mendryl (sp?) bend pipes. For 200 bucks.
My question is, Will it be too loud? And will it hurt the performance. I've read in your forums of people having problems with similar set ups.

It's mandrel, but don't worry about that. Too loud? It all depends on your definition of too loud. Some guys like straight pipes (no muffler at all). I couldn't take that much noise.
Performance-wise, it seems that every exhaust system for our trucks increases top-end power, but loses a little on the low end, except for one. Magnaflow. Their system is the only one-to my knowledge-that has an increase on the bottom end, and from the posts I've read, continues throughout the entire RPM range. Check out Troyer's site, or do a search using "exhaust" or "catback" and you'll find loads of info.
Good luck.

The price is fair. Are they configuring the exhaust from off the shelf mandrel bent pieces or do they have a mandrel press? If it was possible to compile a list here of the most complained about muffler, it would be the Flowmaster, with no close seconds.

Well, it's just a fact. I know that Flowmaster is a common choice, has a legendary reputation in the Mustang circles, and has as new design, but many complain about them on F-150s here (almost 5 years of reading here for me). I've heard them for years on many vehicles, as well as owned them myself. The original version is mild steel which rots out from the inside in a couple of years. The chambered design has low flow; 1/2 to 1/6th of better choices. Finally, many complaints here involve loss of low end torque. I try to be factual instead of passionate about my preferences. Look at this for a flow example:

www.dynomax.com/ultrafloss.stm

Dynomax makes a 3" SI/SO that flows over 2000 cfms.

Thanks for the info guys. It was very helpful. The guy has a pipe press, also shelf pipes, the price quote was from the shelf price. All I've heard about is flowmaster mufflers, got to look at one yesterday, factory mufflers are beer can thin, the flowmaster was made out of heavy gague steel with all seams welded... seems like a good, heavy muffler. The dealer has never seen one give out in his 12 years. That'll probably be my choice, thanks again guys.

You're Welcome Dingo ! Good luck with your installation.

Willie- Yes, the Ultra-flow is as loud as a Flowmaster. It's an extremely throaty, muscle car on steroids sound. If they aren't loud enough, they make small, round, race mufflers as well that can eliminate all enjoyment of music and conversation. My wife always told me..." I can always tell when you're coming home 2 blocks away." I have no problem with people using any system that interests them personally and I wasn't trying to dis your system. In the past, when you asked your installation questions, I freely answered all that I could to help you design your Flowmaster system without recommending a muffler.

I just bought a '01 F150 screw with dual flowmasters straight out the back. Sounds really nice and mellow. It has a nice tone when you roll into it, but isn't too obnoxious at 60-75mph either.

Ditto that. I recently had a 2-chamber Flowmaster installed with 3.5" angle cut pipes out the back and it not only looks great but sounds perfect. Paid $286 and change for it installed. Havent noticed any power loss at all but then again I dont drag race my SCrew either. I use my 5.0 for that kind of play.
Have no doubts bud, thats a great price and you will grin every time you start it up or get on it to pass that blue-hair in the Crown Vic in front of you. And no its not TOO loud either. Sounds just right. Go fer it.

Not sure why it posted like that. Edited it for spelling and then it kept showing up like that.

exhaust installed

Had my flowmaster exhaust installled today, it sounds awsome. I was terrified it was going to be too loud, not so.Went with the 50 series muffler with 2-1/2 " pipes out the back, straight chrome tips. It has a nice mellow tone, but when you put your foot down it's awsome . I would recomend it to anyone,
AWSOME...........

Any Problems With 50 Series?

Hey Dingo, I also just got the same 50 series setup put on my 2004 5.4L 4x4 F-150. I was wondering if you have experienced the same thing that I am. The system sounds great but once I hit about 45 mph I can start to hear this "humming/whistling" sound. I don't know if it is just the way the truck is supposed to sound or if I should go back to the place I got the exhaust installed and ask them to check it out. Let me know if you have the same problem. Thanks!

Thumbs up Hooker Aerochambers

Flow masters are Loud! Try the areochambers from Hooker headers. Welded outer case just like flow master, but have a stainlessteel inner and have no baffles. You can literally look straight through the muffler. It uses convergent /divergent chambers to cancel harsh soundwaves. Has a sweet rumble a little louder than Borla mufflers at a third the price. Check them out at SummitRacing.com. I've used them on the last 4 vehicles I've owned (the wife even enjoys them!)"85 T-bird, '89 E-150 conversion, '92 F-150, '02 F-150 screw, soon on an '05 Lariat screw.
