Class S Chains necessary?
Class S Chains necessary?
I recently purchased a 2002 F-150 SuperCrew 4X4 with the off-road package and P265/70R-17 tires. I am buying chains for it as I live in Wyoming and do some diving through snow and mud during hunting excursions. The owners manual says to use only “SAE Class S chains”. Is this for real?! A full size 4X4 and I need to use Class S chains? I would really prefer to use more aggressive chains if possible. Does anyone out there have any experience with this?
Thanks
Thanks
Doesn't make sense to me!!
Last year I bought some of those light weight chains that are for use on the hiway. Like these http://www.tirechain.com/car_chainin...nstruction.htm
Then I went into the mountains and needed REAL traction and put'em on all four tires......what a joke. It was pathetic.
They are real easy and fast to put on and take off, so I'm glad I have them for light use. They are really good for that.
Anyway, I wanted to get some heavy chains for off road use so I got some like these http://www.tirechain.com/VBAR.htm. I too run the stock size tires and I have NO problem with these large tire chains. Plenty of clearance. I double up on the chain tighteners cuz it just makes sense to me.
I always buy two pairs so I can put chains on all four tires. The second set was expensive, but I think it is worth it. I haven't been back to that location in the snow since I got the better set, but I think they will make a whale of a difference.
