Question Factory Head Unit

Does anyone know who makes the factory stereo head units for Ford? The display on mine went out and I just need that part to fix it.

As far as I know, it's Visteon. I'm pretty sure that the CD changers, amps and speakers are sourced out to existing brand name (ie Pionner, Kenwood, etc) audio manufacturers. Not sure whom though.

Hi Dave,

Can I make a suggestion? Don't fix it... replace the entire head unit. I have no idea what you'll pay to get it fixed through Ford but for $100 to $150, you could get a sonically better head unit with more wattage and clarity. (Alpine and Kenwood come to mind)

Of course, factory speaker replacement would be the first place to start (if you haven't done so already) but since the head unit is already showing signs of problems... I wouldn't mess with it anymore.

My 2-centavos

Visteon makes them and if yours is on the blink, I would suggest you buy an aftermarket unit. Sounds a helluva lot better and nowhere near the cost!

I have been anting to replace the 6disc in dash in my Truck for sometime. I however have been very disapointed at what I have found on the market.

Let me Explain

I have a 2003 F-150 King Ranch 4x4
The stock stereo sound ok but I want to hook up my portable MP3 player. I bought an fm modulator for the radio but the quality sucks.

So I want to change out the head unit. (I worked for an install shop for 2 years so no problem there)

I can't find a head unit that will look good in the dash. I mean matching the Illumination and not downgrading the wood grain trim. Oh I also hate red on stereos. (Sorry Sony)

Anyone have a clue as to what might look good. Also I have trouble finding a kit that will match the smooth face of the rest of the dash.

I've been a Pioneer man my whole life but there current products suck.

Check out this link:
iPod install
I run either my iPod or Palm which has Realplayer through my stock head unit on my '03 King Ranch Supercrew and love it. Give it a try. You won't regret it.

Thanks for the info. I checked out Visteon and they were useless.

I know its not worth fixing but what makes me mad is the CD changer works fine but I can't find anything that will make the CD changer work with an aftermarket head unit which means I would have to buy both and I really didn't want to do that.

I am looking at the Alpine CDM-9823 and that's probably what I will go with and maybe get the CD changer later.

Thanks again,
Dave

You can pick up an OEM HU on Ebay for $100 that will control the OEM changer. If you want to upgrade, go for it, but you don't have to.

Visteon doesn't sell directly to consumers. They are a supplier to OEM's. The only way to get a new one is through your Ford dealer and expect to pay $500-700 for it.

Hey Davesupercrew

Have you tried Crutchfield
www.crutchfield.com

They carry a lot of OEM parts that may allow your new HU to control the factory cd changer.

I can't see why they wouldn't have something for the number 1 selling vehicle in the country.

SaddleSitting,

I already talked to crutchfield and they have adapters to hook up the existing head unit to an aftermarket CD changer but not the other way around.

If I knew who made the CD changer I could check with them and see if they make something but I'm not sure who that is.

This may be a late reply, but I have an Alpine CDA-9805 and the install kit from Crutchfield. I chose the 9805 because the backlighting is green, similar to the rest of the gauges. As for fit, I'm very happy with the Crutchfield kit.

Pioneer

I wouldn't be so quick to rule out the pioneers so fast. I really like mine and I pretty picky. While the pictures I do have make it look a little chinsy, it really does not have that look in person.. Also notice the night shot. I think it matches the dash quite nicely and I get compliments on it a lot...

See more pics in my sig..

When you install the receiver, do you have to mount the pocket above it or can it go below also?
