Question Grinding sound when appling brakes

I am hearing a grinding sound and can feel it in the brake peddle when I apply the brakes on hard stops. It does not do it all the time. I did call the dealer and he said it could be the ABS brakes. This is on a 2001 ford supercrew 4x4. Anybody else having this problem.

If you’re hearing a grinding sound, you should pull off one of your tires and check out the brake pads. Grinding sounds usually mean, the pads are shot. If the pads are shot and you continue to drive it, you will screw up your rotors.

how long have you had your screw?
Did this just start or has it progressed?
I have an '01 screw and recently had squeaking, grinding brakes so I replaced the front pads. Squeaking stopped and the heavy grinding stopped but, on occasion, I do still notice a slight vibration in the pedal. I drove a new GMC today and felt the grinding. On both I only noticed it when stopping quickly.

Weird. I'd still check the pads though. I got 65K miles before I had to replace my original (front) pads.

My truck does the same thing. A grinding vibration up front when applying slowing down. But, it only does it every now and then. Not all of the time. I have a 01 supercrew 4x4. I posted this same question awhile back and got no helpful responses.

My truck started doing this at 24,000 miles and got worst 500 miles later.....I took it to the dealer and needed new rotors and pads. They said the rotors were not thick enough to keep....

What you're probably hearing is the little wear tab on the front pads contacting the rotor. The tab is a little piece of metal that is there to tell you when you're due for a pad replacement. Judging from the number of miles you have on the truck I think it's very reasonable to assume that you need to replace the front pads.

Unfortunately on my '01, the replacement pads made a terrible grinding noise (different from the wear indicator tab noise) and there was nothing I could do about it. I had the problem with several different sets.

Anyway, it's no big deal to find out you just need to pull the front wheels off but I can almost guarantee that you need to replace the front pads.

I agree with the other posts. You need to have those pads checked and possibly have the rotors turned. The squeaking is a sign of brake pad wear, the vibration is a sign of rotor warp. This can all be fixed with a complete brake job. Take it to a dealer or any tire center and let them have a look!

Brake pad life can vary with driving style, miles between stops, etc. I have 42k miles on my 2003 FX4 and it is ready for new pads. My 2001 Sport Trac went about 36000 miles before it needed new pads.

Good Luck!
