Towing a diesel

Got a call from my Dad the other night. It seems that he was on his way to pick up his trailer to make a load to Dallas when his truck just died on him. The engine was running and he had power, he just couldn't get it to the wheels. Anyway, he called me to come pick him up, so I drove about 40-50 miles when he told me that he wanted me to pull him a couple of 100 yards to a volunteer fire department up the road. We had to get a strap from a friend of his at a truck stop and a hitch to put on the truck. I was surprised that the truck pulled him as good as it did. I got it up to about 30 miles an hour. I was really not very comfortable pulling him so closely behind me, but I trusted that he wouldn't run into me.

Anyway, here is what I towed, minus the trailer.

I asked and he said that it weighed about 18,000.

It was hell going up hills and I did not want to slow down going down a hill.

that's a lot more than the 9900 towing capacity Ford claims.

Choke on that Titan!

I read a story about a Jeep Liberty pulling a truck/trailer up some small hills in the snow/ice in 4WD low. Probalby less stress in low gear range and low traction surfaces, but impressive.

Impressive yes...

Not surprising either!

However.....

Is it extremely harmful to your drivetrain... DEFINITELY!

Pretty Cool!

It should be ok for your truck unless you went up a very big hill.
18k does not mean it had 18k of stress on the truck.

I can push my truck in neutral does that mean I can lift 8k?

Pretty cool though

I think most of Fords towing ratings are low, one thing is that for every pound you pull with a normal trailer you have to stop that as well, as for your dads truck he could controlle that manual, plus you were not going 80. I am glad to know it can be done..

That is true about the stopping thing.

I was worried that he would hit the brakes and I would end up pulling off my trailer hitch.

Ha ha story time.

I remember when I was about 16 me my brother and my cousing took a load of beans up to the elevator. And my cousing stalled the truck and it wouldn't start (Semi Tractor) and a guy with a 2 wheel drive Chevy pulled us to get it going. It took a while with a lot of tire spinning but when he popped the clutch it jerked the azz end of that pickup off the ground.

It was really funny!
