Thule 422 Xsporter rack for canoe?
Thule 422 Xsporter rack for canoe?
I just purchased a 2002 F-150 Supercrew and need a rack to carry a 17' canoe, and possibly double as a ladder/lumber carrier.
I have been looking at the Thule 422 Xsporter , and it would seem to be what I need.
A couple of questions. The truck has the factory bed liner, and bed rail guards/tops. Will this rack system work with those installed are will I need to make alterations to the liner? I will call Thule about this.
Also, I have been looking at the 579 Canoe Carrier . I know these are canoe specific and would probably be the best. But is there a way to make your own tie-downs? Not sure what kind of channel that the tie-downs go into on the rails, and was wondering if anyone had any Thule specific info on their rails?
Any other alternative products (Yakima) you might suggest to handle my needs? The price at www.autoracksdirect.com was the best I've seen for the Thule products. $439 total for Xsporter, and canoe carrier.
Any infor is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Didn't get much response, there are a few threads out there about rooftop carriers. Do a search on Yakima, Thule or expedition rack and see what pops up.
Meanwhile here's one I found, might not be much help:

I just bought the Yakima Dry Dock for my vehicle, and am pretty happy with it. I've got one crossbar that I mount mid rear door, and I've carried about 200lbs on it carefully, I'm not sure what the dock is rated for, but the rooftop bars state 165lbs.
The whole deal was about $322 for me, the drydock was $150, pair of bars, $47, Q-Towers $70, Q-Clips $25, and shipping $30
I bought this from a specialty truck shop, that didn't stock it, and after 3 weeks, found a outdoor shop that stocked everything-- would have saved about $60 as they had a sale, reducing the cost another 10%. If you have a local REI, check that, or if you're in Milwaukee, WI, Laacke&Joys stocks them too.
