light on cap not working, how to diagnose problem

I Just bought a 2002 Supercrew Lariat FX4 F150 with a cap on back. There is a light with the cap but it doesn't work. I see the wires coming up from the bed and there is a fuse on them. All looks good but the light doesn't work. I checked the bulb, it's fine, the fuse is fine. Can someone help me out on what to do here to get this working. I am not good with electrical but i can do a voltage test if i knew how. Could it be a fuse under the steering wheel? What else can i check? How to.. thanks in advance.

No need to get a volt-meter. Just get a cheap 12 volt test light and check the wires at the fuse and the light. If there is a switch you'll have to check that as well. If you have no current to the light you're going to have to trace it to the power source. You didn't say that you have done that so I would check that first.

If it is anything like the light inside my ARE cap it only works when the headlights are on. It is annoying at times that it was wired this way but when testing the voltage you may want to make sure the headlights are on.

I'd put a nickel on the headlights needing to be on. I had a Century on my old truck and that's how they wired them up. I'm getting the ARE Z-series for my screw and getting the non-wired light for it.

I have a Raider Cap on my Supercrew with the same problem. The dealer told me they are under strict orders to wire them so that you have to have the key in the ignition and either on or at the accessory position to avoid running down the battery. They are afraid that you will leave the light on and run down your battery. I had quite an argument with the dealer to get to go on without the way it is wired. I lost!!!! He told me to wire it the way I wanted it, but they would not break their rules for me. Even the argument of I'm a grownup and if I run down the battery that's my fault. Their answer was still no.

tried it with the lights on, the car running, the key in acces. NO luck. Still doesn't work. does anyone know if there is a fuse under the dash for this light (curtesy light).. that could be burnt? the one back at the cap is in good condition. I really don't want to pull all the wire to find the problem until i check everything easy.

Mine is wired , thru a fuse , to the battery side of the solenoid on the passenger side firewall. Check it there .
