Rear Door Panel Flex on SuperCrew
Rear Door Panel Flex on SuperCrew
I was detailing the interior of my 2003 SCrew this past weekend and noticed that when you put the rear window down on either left or right side door the speaker moves forward and backward toward the door panel. No this wasn't speaker movement associated with listening to the radio. Litterly the entire speaker housing was moving back and forth (as I could tell from my aftermarket install of some Polk speakers in the rear doors.) The tweeters would push up against the interior trim panel grille when the window was down and pull away when the window was put up. I'm starting to wonder if there is some steel panel flexing going on and granted a whole bunch of people were having "Window Crack" issues, I'm wondering if this back and forth motion will affect the structural integrity of the rear doors.
Anyone else notice this or can verify that I'm not the only one experiencing this?
Thanks,
Tony

I think your speakers are too deep. Some of the polks bottom out in the pod on the rear doors. I had the Polk ex368s in my front doors until I blew one. If you remove one of the speakers and look inside the pod you will see part of the window mechanism (at least I can on my 2001) in a hole on the door.
I didn't think the Polk db570's were TOO deep at all when I installed them. As you can see from the photos, there is a hole in the panel for access to the window mechanism, but it just appears to be a spring. I didn't think the spring would be causing interference with the speaker.

Only think it could be would the XTC foam baffle I installed behind the speaker causing it to rub against the spring as it coils up when the window is put down. But I don't see how that could force the speaker to flex outward...

I don't know, I never checked the spring out either when I did it myself. The pics are over 3 months old. I really do believe that something is up with the metal panel, which is why I asked someone else to check this for me. It could easily just be the fact that the spring applies leverage to the metal panel right at that particular spot causing the metal to flex a little.
Can anyone else verify this?

It must be the after market speakers you have installed. I have a

Maurice,
You check to see if the rear speaker is moving through the speaker grille while operating the windows up and down? If not, then I'll have to tear into the doors again
and see that the deal is.

TonyPTX. I checked as you suggested and watched the speakers through the speaker grills using a flashlight. There was absolutely no movement when winding the windows up or down.
Hope you find a solution. Maurice.
