acetoned badges!

hey fella's, just wondering if anyone has done their Screw. i am planning on doing it but am afraid to do the front badges since i'll loose the red "XLT", the rear one will look sweet no doubt. i was thinking about maybe taping off the XLT and acetoning around it, to keep the red. any pics, suggestions? thanks, willie

Willie,

Sorry but I think you will lose the XLT part. The XLT is a sticker. I tried to keep mine but the acetne fried the edges of the sticker so I ended up taking them off.

Good Luck but I don't think that you can keep the letters.

PS..I went to Torrey Pines High...love SD

Just go ahead and do it, and have a vinyl shop reproduce the red XLT. I would think it would cost too much...

Tou dont have to lose the XLT, I simply covered mine with clear duct tape and carefully cut around them with a razor blade. I have a pic of it in my gallery. Just be careful, its not that hard.

How do you do it?

What method did you use and what supplies are involved? I like the looks of the badges after doing this. Anyone give me any suggestions?

Did you leave the clear duct tape on after you acetoned the badges or did you remove it?

You will not loose the XLT if you take your time. I did one side with a heavy amount of acetone and wiped off the XLT. I started out slow but after the letters started to shrivel I said what the heck and wiped them off. On the second side I kept the rag somewhat dry and used lite pressure on the XLT portion. I also took my time the second time around as I did not want to soak the letters and it worked out great. It probably only took a few minutes more. Patience was the key.

I did one side badge and the rear tailgate badge on my 2002 fx4 lariat black and like it. Since I have 1 done and 1 undone I'll try and get some pictures tomorrow of both so you can see an actual before and after for fun. Ran out of daylight that day and never did the last one - definately tape up to protect your paint as the acetone seems to run no matter how little you try to use.

I acetoned mine last summer. I tried to keep the XLT, even tried the cutting trick, but failed. The cutting trick left permanent scracthes in the badge in the shape of XLT. So what I did was have some custom badges made up. Hope you enjoy!

Just a thought but coudnt you just acetone the entire badge then mask most of the badge with tape and something like chapstick. Similiar to making ford emblems. Then just spray paint the xlt or tritan v8 letters. Then just take off the tape and carefully rub off the chapstick mask.
