Does MPG improve with topper?

Calling Leer and ARE topper owners:

I have been thinking of getting a topper for my SCrew, probably an ARE 'Z sreies' and wondered if those of you who have these tops saw any changes in your MPG after putting them on? I am not interested in a lid of flat bed cover. I need the topper to give my black lab room in the back.

Thanks!

Couldn't tell you for sure on the Screws, but on my old Ranger my highway mileage did go up some, city stayed the same or was lower. More weight on the truck, it was a 4 banger though and didn't have any power to spare.

With a fullsize truck and a V8 I would imagine you would see a slight increase all around.

I had my best gains with a flat cap, but if that will not suit your needs not much point.

If you have a need for the topper, get it, any extra benifit - mpg, dry cargo, will be an added bonus

I didn't see an increase in my mpg, but I have a lead foot anyway. I thought I would save a little mpg, but haven't seen any increase. Some have said they saw an increase, but it couldn't have been much.

I have an Astro, which is similar to a Leer. No improvment for me, but no worse either. I'm happy because I need the cap.

I put a raider cap on my Supercrew and the mileage did go up. Before it went on, I was averaging 13 -16 mpg, afterwards I average 15 - 20. But to answer your question, I noticed a 2 -3 mpg improvement.

Thanks for the replies. I love my truck, but the prices at the pump are pretty tough these days. I have wanted a top for some time and will probably end up with one. Just wondered if I would realize any saving between fill ups.

You'll get some

just get a microscope and a tiny calculator to see it.

I have a Jason cap on my 03 SCrew and haven't noticed any difference at all in MPG.

If you think you'll ever recoup the price of the cap vis a vis better gas mileage, you'll get better returns investing in some Enron stock.

the best way to increase mileage is to accelerate slow and smooth, topper really didn't show any improvement, at least not in mpg!

I have not noticed any improvement with my mileage. IMO a V8 in a truck is just going to suck no matter what

King Ranch Soft Tonneau on mine... I've noticed, maybe, 1 mpg.

I seriously doubt that you would save gas with a topper. But let's say that at best, it could save you up to 1/2mi. per gallon; you would probably give that little savings right back because of the extra weight added(nearly 100lbs with hardware). The extra weight on the rear wheels, the functionality, and the look makes the toppers more than worth the $$$.

Remove the tailgate if it's that big of a deal.
