is that oil cap looking light on the dash mean its low on gas ??
i asked this on the engine post and got different replys. 2003 Screw 5.4,I am looking at has a light on the right side of the gages that is lit. It looks like a gas cap unscrewed. It has about 1/4 tank. is it a low gas light or something else ? I tried taking of the gas cap and reinstalling it but it stayed on. I only drove the truck about 5 miles and it has 19K miles on it.
Welp...
It could be that your gas cap is loose. There is a sensor that measure the vacuum on the gas tank or something like that. If the cap is not put on properly, it can cause a trouble code. It (the code) will clear after a few days.
Have you checked the gas cap?
Please post up what you find...

This is my first time in the F150 online message boards. I just bought a 2003 F150 Supercrew with 13,000 miles so you will be seeing me around with alot of questions in future so please bare with me.
As for as the light goes, my wife has a 2000 buick LeSabre and she would get a warning that her gas cap was loose. After checking the cap to no avail she took it to the dealer which found that it had a leak in what he refered to a "EPA can I believe". They replaced the can and gasket if my memory serves me correctly and all is well. This sounds very much like the problem you described. I hope I am not to far off topic.....
Hope this helps.

One more thing...
I was told that you should fill it up as well to help resolve the problem..
It could also be the seal on the gas cap has gone bad or wasn't making a tight seal...
Later,
Chris

Low Fuel = "LOW FUEL" Light
The "gas cap" dash light is just that, something lose with the gas tank losing vapor. Double check the cap like everyone said. If it doesn't go away, have Ford look at replacing the sensor.
FYI...running the tank empty will produce a "LOW FUEL" light to show up in amber in the lower left corner near the fuel gauge. It obviously means you need to get your a$$ to a gas station and fill up because you've passed the 20 gallon marker and are now tapping into the 5 gallon "reserve" section of the gas tank.

Those signs at the gas station are not just a suggestion. It's a violation of the CFR (the chapter dealing with USDOT, don't remember off hand). There are also some states with laws against this. Its a dangerous practice.
