dirt from tails

Every time I wash my '01 SCrew, there is a stream of grit that comes from the taillights when I rinse with the hose. It seems to be neverending. As long as I rinse the tails, sand/grit comes out. This has been the case each time I have washed it since I have owned it. My truck very rarely sees mud, and when it does, it is not serious stuff, moderate at best.
I had a '99 SCab before this truck and this never happened with it. Is this common with the SCrews, or is this something unique to my truck?

Take your tail lights off and duct tape the hole that is behind the lights...

Quick and easy fix.

Long story short, there's a hole there. No clue why but, it exists. It gathers ALL KINDS of grit/grime from the road.

I did it about a year ago and I don't have the problem anymore...

Please let it be know that according to Ford, the holes in the rear of the taillight housings are there for a reason. Duct taping the holes will decrease the airflow from the wheelwells out through the taillight assembly and therefore increase the drag on the overall vehicle and increase fuel consumption. Additionally by blocking that airflow you may also be causing your rear brakes to overheat in certain circumstances.

NOT! Good tip RP, I've got to try it, the little dribble of dirt has been driving me crazy.

Thumbs up

Thqnks so much for the info RockPicker! It looks like I will be removing the tails next week and duct taping the dadgummed hole. (And I don't even care if it messes up my aero profile!)

Why would taping the hole in front of the taillight cause your brakes to overheat.

Just an ill-conceived comment searching for a laugh.... sorry, no factual evidence to support such a claim.

I can't take total credit for this one... I believe I learned it from Harley#356. That Josh guy is good for something every now and then... LOL!!! (I can say that here because he rarely roams around here anymore... )

No problem though... just a quick and easy fix.

Thanks for the good info guys--the infamous sand and dirt running from the tails (or after heavy rain) was pi$$ing me off. Where would this world be without duct tape?

I can't type--I meant to say during a wash or after heavy rain--it has been a long day!
