Angry Rough Cold Start When Parked Uphill

I got in my truck this evening, and it took two tries to get the engine to even turnover and start. I had it parked facing uphill on my driveway for the past day or so. When I finally got it started, the engine was running VERY rough and at a high idle (appx 1200) for a little while.. so I sat there and kind of let it run while I freaked hoping for it to go away.

When the idle rpms went down some, I backed out into the street (flat, like the rest of Miami), and it was still idling high, but not as rough. I let it run a little more, and i turned it off and started it again. Still a bit of a rough start--but not having to turn over as much, or idling as high.

So off I went, drove & handled fine... at my friends house, I was able to start it normally.

... What gives?

I've parked it facing uphill before, and nothing like that has happened. I figured maybe all of the fuel drained out of the engine & line somehow overnight.

Has this happened to anyone here before?

I parked it facing downhill... so we'll see tomorrow. If it ever does it again--high ho its off to the dealer we go

New trucks aren't supposed to start like that.

Hi,

I just went to the dealer for a problem like this. In my case the truck wasn't starting well every once in awhile. At first I thought nothing of it but then it started happening more often. I then thought it might be the gas I was using so I tried a few different stations with no effect.

Finally I took it into the dealer. The kept it for a couple of days and of course it started up for them fine every time and all their computer scans looked fine.

When I went to pick it up, I guess because my truck has something against me, it wouldn't start again there at the dealers. I had the technician come out and look at it. He then realized that it was probably that the idler valve wasn't working correctly. This wouldn't show up on a computer scan because it is an output valve and not an input valve.

He replaced it within about 15 minutes and I haven't had a problem since. He did say that he has seen this a couple of times before with the trucks and doesn't know why he didn't think of it to begin with (likely story ). But he did mention that the biggest indicator of this is that if it is hard to start the RPMs will jump up higer than they should for a little bit after it does start.

Hopefully this is it in your case as it is an easy fix.

Dave

You mentioned that the tech had seen it a few times...

I know I've read about it on here numerous times and it's a fairly common problem. Might be something to consider....
