Service Engine Soon
Service Engine Soon
Hi all. I have a service engine soon light and believe it _may_ be false. Meaning, someone told me that Ford has the light come on at certain mileage so you will bring the truck in. Is this the case? How is the light reset?
Thanks
Thanks
I've never heard of it falsing to draw you into the service bay but, maybe it does...
My wife's 2002 Accord SE does it every so often (6K miles I think) but, it's simple to reset and is described in her owner's manual. Not sure I've ever seen/read/heard about it falsing for any other reason though...
Maybe you do have an issue... *shrugs*
Where are you on miles? O2 Sensor maybe?

The light comes on because your engine's sensors detected a problem. I would take it in to the dealer (or another facility with the proper equipment) so they can hook it up to their diagnostic equipment to find out what caused the light to come on. You're not obligated to have them repair what they find but at least you will know why the light came on.
I can only assume that even though you only have 34,000 miles that you are beyond the 3 year limit on your warranty, otherwise I would figure that you would immediately take it to the dealer to get it fixed for FREE.

My service engine soon light came on at 33,500 miles. 'Course it was covered by warranty. I decided to take it in to complain about oil smoke at morning start up also that was really starting to concern me. Seems they fixed the problem, some FFE sensor (whatever that is) malfunctioned and allowed oil to get into the exhaust somehow.
Anyway, what a relief to start the truck this morning at 32 degrees and not see anything but the normal steam from the pipe!

Had my SES light go on at about 40,900 miles. First symptoms acted like bad gas or a missing cylinder. After about 50 more miles the SES light came on. Owners manual talks about bad gas or some form of emission problem. Poured in some STP gas treatment which made no differrence. I drove over 200 miles with this condition before I could get it back to the dealer. Took it to my dealer and found the coil/plug on the #2 cylinder was bad. After $350 the truck runs just great as it always has. The SES light worked in my case.

Just had my '02 in at 43,000 miles for a DPFE sensor. Apparently the sensor has been re-engineered because the old one builds up too much carbon. Dealer said they have had literally thousands of trucks in for this.
I bet thats what it is. They are about $70.

Mine just started running rough at 70,000 miles and the SES light started coming on intermittently. After a couple of days it got worse and the the light stay on constantly. Took it in to the dealer tonight and after 8 new spark plugs, a couple of boots, fuel filter, oil change and $360, the truck runs like a charm. Not happy about the cost but it had to be done.
