Ok my friend just bought a 01 screw in the middle of the dash there are like 4 inch long vent type openings, we check to see if was for the defroster but its not anyone have a idea what these are

 

I believe you are refering to the 4ea. 1 inch long openings at the left of the top dash cover. These would be the openings for the photo sensor that controls the Autolamp system.
The sensor is located just below the openings so it can "see" the amount of light needed to turn the system on and off as needed.

 

Just like Keith mentioned, I believe that is the 'eye' for the autolamps.
