How much hitch drop
How much hitch drop
? for the folks out there with a 03 Screw FX4 and factory hitch.
How much of a drop do you need for most of your normal trailering? I am considering a Reese 5.25" drop hitch to pull a snowmobile trailer and also a older boat trailer. I know there is a way to measure but since I tow different trailers, I want a happy medium. There is also a 6" or 3" drop, all will tow upto 5000lbs.
Thanks in advanced

I have a Reese 6000 x 600LBS. hitch with a 3 inch drop. That puts the ball at 16 inches off the ground. For trailering our boat around that trailer tongue with 13 inch wheels sits close to level. Hope this helps.
I've seen hitches with the 6 inch drop but I think you always want to be around 16 inches ball to ground.

I can't tell you in inches but the safest and most comfortable towing will be with your trailer level. On level ground, level the trailer with the tongue jack and measure up into the hitch where the top of the ball would be. Then go to the truck and you can see where the top of the ball should be. If you end up needing two different drops, go for them. It will be worth it. Just my 2 cents worth, but I have towed several trailers many miles.
The way to determine the ball height is to disconnect the trailer from your truck and get the trailer level using the tongue jack and measure from inside the top of the trailer ball coupler to the ground. Then measure from the top of your truck ball to the ground. The truck hitch ball should be 1/2 to 1" lower than the first measurement. If you tow trailers with different coupler heights you can get an adjustable hitch head.
6 inches is waaaay too much. 3 0r 4 inches is probably good for most trailers.I tow many different types of trailers from time to time and I have an ajustable hitch. You can pick one up for around 50 bucks and it is well worth it. Changing drop/rise takes only about 5 minutes...tops. 5 minutes well worth it to be towing with the trailer level each and every time.
Plus...the ajustable hich sticks out a little bit further and has saved my rear bumprer from being dinged twice! So i keep it in the reciever all the time.

hmm...1 7/8" flips to a 2"........That sounds like an adjustable ball instead of an adjustable hitch .
I thought the question was about the drop hieght of the hitch. Maybe I misunderstood.
Anyhoo....this is what I have and works fantastic!

Forgot. Here's a link to one place to get one. There are many other places to find these.

Rebel,
I have that same adjsutable hitch as you, and I also picked up a Convert A Ball. Ultimate flexability. I paid $38 from a local RV supply store for the 1"Chrome shaft and all three ***** (1 7/8, 2, 2 5/16). Save about $10 if you only want the smaller two. I found it (or another similar product) here for olny $30.
