Question Noise in front of dash

I've got a '03 SCrew, only a few months old. There's a squeak/rattle coming from behind the passenger-side dash. I can't quite place it. If you've ever carried one of those dorm-sized refrigerators and heard the tank rattling on that...that's kinda what it sounds like. Almost a rubber-on-metal sound. Of course, it shuts up when I take it to the dealer.
It's loudest on moderate bumps; on big bumps, it's quieter; on small bumps, it's quieter. Any ideas? Anyone experience this? Thanks all!

Me too

My squeak is plastic on plastic. I seems to come from the glove box but I removed everything and unhooked it and it still squeaks. On mine it only happens when the day is cool. It'll squeak like crazy in the morning but if it gets above 80 it stops. Don't look forward to having a dealer look at it, just like with you when I take it in the squeak won't be there.

TERPN8R,

I had a very similar rattle coming from the front of my 03'. It was when I hit small bumps or when I was pulling up into my driveway. It was a rattle/clunking noise. I had it checked out at the shop and they found a loose upper control arm bolt. Once tightened down no more clunk. This is a recall on the 03' 150's I believe. Wouldnt hurt to check it out. The dealer should fix it for free.

Unhappy

I had a similar noise like that in my 2001 screw. Had the dealer take down the entire dash looking for it. Turned out to be a screw that had been put into inside one the windshield defroster pipes at the front of the truck. Only heard it going around corners. Some worker on the assembly line got bored and put it in according to the dealer. This is not an un-common occurance according to my dealer. Hope this helps, and good luck finding it.

I have the same clunk sound from the front end when goin over like washboard roads at slow speeds. It just started, is there a recall bulletin anyone can find or do we just ask the stealer about it? RP might know...hint hint...LOL.

dash rattle

I have an 02 KR Supercrew. Had the same problem which dealer could never find. Ended up by placing a soft sponge behind the glove box and the plastic housing. Worked - Use superglue to mount the sponge.

TERPN8R,
I had a similiar noise problem with my 02 FX4 SuperCrew. Found and isolated the noise by pushing slightly in on the lower left hand side of the passenger side airbag when going over bumps in the road.

Took my truck to the dealer and they replaced the airbag under warranty and that solved my rattling noise problem when going over bumps. So, you might want to try this on your truck to see if it solves the noise problem you have.

Keith460, thanks for the tip. I fiddled with the airbag on the way to work this morning and pushing on the lower left corner stopped the squeak. I'm heading to the dealer.

Guys,
At least look at this one......Check the screws on the bottom of the passenger side front door. I had a terrible plastic on plastic rubbing squeaking that i thought was from my right side dash. I had a buddy in the truck and he discovered it was from the door......
Good Luck

You are right about that S'CrewLoose, found the screws loose on my truck doors last year when the drivers side door was making a noise. Removed them and used "blue" loctite to secure them as well as screw that were coming out of the drivers seat lower side panel. I would advise other owners to do the same or the problem will repeat itself.

Thanks Guys, I'm taking it in to my dealer with the list of possibilities...I'll let you know the outcome. What a great resource this site is, and what great folks you are for providing so many suggestions. Of course, that just means we've all had our share of problems.... But out of a Gazzillion SCrews sold, if only a dozen of us found a squeak, I guess Ford can consider it a success. I'm not complaining too loudly.

Thanks again everyone.

They finally got it. The squeak is gone. It was the hood struts. The final bill said "install new struts and realign hood".
