Question Soft Tranny?

Hi Guys,

Just got a front end alignment done yesterday. The shop owner was telling me that the trannies in our trucks are kinda soft. He suggested that if I am driving around town, to turn off OD? He said it would make my tranny last a bit longer.

Is this true?

Thanks in advance,

Jag

I've never heard that one, actually I've always heard that Ford Transmissions are very solid and reliable. They do shift a little soft, but that's for ride comfort. A superchip will fix that problem, nice firm and quicker shifts. As far as being soft and needing to turn OD off, I don't think so. OD will save you a lot of gas.
If you do a lot of stop and go driving, or up and down hills, I think it is recommended to turn OD off during those time. I think I've read that somewhere anyway.

By the way, nice truck. I really like that color combination.
How do you like the Edelbrock Shocks?

Thanks,

Rick

I've never heard of such a thing either... I'm very interested in hearing what others have to say about this as well.

I thought the shifting was to soft and went with a Trango Performance shift kit; installed with setting one of three. The Kenne Bell chip is firmer too. Nice setup with my Kenne Bell supercharger! I also repaced the transmission fluid with Amsoil synthetic - nice product!

The only time I turn the OD off now is at the track.

Rick,

Thanks for the compliements. The shocks are AWSOME compared to the stock (so called) Ranchos. Definitely far better ride and handling!

Nice truck you have too. How is that Mag-tec differential cover? A worthwhile investment?

I'll second the Amsoil, When I changed my tranny fluid it made a difference when shifting. It felt smoother, and it seems to shift quicker.

I installed the Mag-hytec differential cover when I noticed a small leak from the factory one. Personally I like it and it get's a lot of compliments. It's definity a quality product, but expensive. I like the O-ring and drain and fill plug. I would recommend it, especially if you tow a lot. I think it took about 6 quarts of fluid when I filled it. I used AMS oil here to, they make some nice products and their prices are good if you pay the $10 membership fee.

If you are "city driving", your tranny will never hit OD anyway so turning it off will do no good at all. The only situation where turning off OD will help your tranny is when towing or driving in very mountainous areas.
The reason for turning it off is to limit the amount of downshifts/upshifts. All the shifting on a prolonged basis can decrease the life of your tranny.

Guys,

Thanks for all the replys. Looks like it was said to me for nothing really. I do a LOT of highway driving anyway, so turning of OD for me would be a rare instance.
